I installed a Linksys USB compact network adapter on my laptop it shows up in the device manager and in the network neighborhood but it does not show up in ipconfig and winipcfg.The operating system is win/98 se.:confused:

Try this from a DOS prompt:
C:\>PING 127.0.0.1 (or LOCALHOST)
If you get a return, the NIC is working. In that case, the cable is probably bad.

also be sure you have bound TCP/IP to the NIC. To add it, go to the Contol Panel|Network then Add protocol, Microsoft, TCP/IP

I always thought ipconfig was specific to NT/2K/XP and winipcfg was for Win98?

DOS has always had IPCONFIG. Thanks to MS, we have the equivalent to WINIPCFG for WinNT:

Thanks guys I finally got it, I hadn't configured the tcp/ip protocol in network neighborhood.According to linksys the software that came with the nic was supposed to do that automatically,i guess it didn't.
