After a file is associated with an app, how do you change the association?
I have a file that I thought was a zip file with the extension missing (in properties it showed up as a "file" only). I added the zzip extension only to find it was not a zip file. How do I take the zip extension off (it is now invisible except under the file's properties).
This is probably some really easy question that I have failed to realize the answer to... http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
Thanks

You can rename the file with the extension you want it to have. You may have to enable show file types in folder options to do this. Then just right-click and rename the extension to your desired extension.

If it is Windows Me or 2000, right click the file, select "Open With...", select Choose Program, find the application you want to use to open the file, and put a check in the box at the bottom that says "Always use this program to open these files"
If this is Windows 98 and previous, hold down the shift key when you right click the file to expose the "Open with..." option in the context menu. Then follow the same procedure.

One more thing if it's Windows Me or 2000... You can go to My Computer, View, Folder Options, select thge File Types tab, scroll down and find the file association.
If the file association has never been changed, the button at the bottom will say "Advanced". But if the association has been changed, it will say "Restore". Clicking the button will reset the association to the original (not previous) association.

Dave, there is an option in 95 and 98 that hides the file extensions under view\options.
I hate that and always want to see the extension.

and furthermore.....go to start, run, and type "winfile" and you can click on the actual file, go up top to "file" then "associate" and you can choose which program to do it with as well depending on your O/S
