Is it true that a WinModem won't work on Linux?

It was my understanding that u couldn't use a winmodem with Linux, only a hardware-based modem, unless Linux has updated to allow for winmodem support

No, winmodems are little pieces of board that have enough hardware on them to get the processor to do modem emulation for it. (At least that is the way I think of it. It is not 100% correct, but is very close). Winmodems are designed solely for windows and without the modem manifacturers giving their specs out freely (won't happen), there will not be Linux drivers for them. here is more info: http://www.idir.net/~gromitkc/winmodem.html

and a list of modems and whether or not they work with Linux: http://www.idir.net/~gromitkc/20010302a.html

I'm mostly a Windows guy, but I have to say... not having Winmodem support in Linux is hardly a drawback <g>

I am curious, daveleau. I just read Rob Rich's post regarding BeOs and winmodems, where LT winmodems are supported in BeOS. So if there is another alternative OS that can use winmodems, what is stopping the manufacturers from developing Linux drivers?

It was my understanding that LT WinModems happen to be supported in Linux (3rd party drivers).

Best bet, though, is to go ahead and spring for one of those hardware-controller-based modems. Unfortunately they are a bit more expensive (my Creative was about $75).
