Battery went dead in my Excursion today.... Of all days it had to be pouring rain, and no dealers open on a Sunday. This really bites cause I only have 4000 miles on it.
I went and bought a OPTIMA red top battery for it. They are suppose to be great batteries. Anyone have any experience or opinions on these?

Excursions . . .
Why do you need that monster truck? If I had $40,000 I'd buy a beemer or something, not a huge suv that can't even offroad because it's so darn big.
Having 14 kids isn't an excuse, you could a conversion van or something. Excursions are just silly ego boosters. :p

Whoa, hehehe
How about ask why I have an Excursion?
1: I needed 4x4, and I needed the room for Equipment, etc. I am a Volunteer Emergency Medical Technician & Fire Fighter and go right to the scenes at times. Where I live there is a lot of country roads, dirt, off highway, etc.
2: Even at the Excursion Size, It does extremely well off roading.
I went to a 4x4 outing and the one of the vehicles that was
there was an excursion and it not only kept up with
everything else, in some events it did MUCH better.
3: When this vehicle came out, I was the same as you, I was like, that is stupid. BUT, let me tell you, its like "Mom" with food, don't say you hate it, until you try it. I love this truck, it is extremely powerful, comfortable, nice ride, roomy. I have the Excursion Limited, its fully loaded with DVD tv system. (My kids love watchin movies on a trip)
You ask anyone that owns one, and they will tell you, they would never give them up!

I helped a woman out of her Mercedes SUV that had just rolled over on its roof. She did not complain when I was able to right her truck with my Chevy ego booster.:p
BTW, prob the first time they had been 'offroad'

Well, back to the subject, the Optima dry cell battery is great. Alot of nascar drivers use them, because they can be mounted in any position, and are very reliable.
The only thing I don't like about them is the price, almost double a regular batteries price, but if it outlasts and performs as advertised, it could be worth it:D

Jell cell. but you should still hit the dealership for the price of the battery as it's still under warranty at that mileage. Also check n make sure you havent got a drain someplace or a faulty alternator.

Nah, the Excursion is just a juice pig. Get used to it. The gell cells are great batteries and will hang in there when you sink that hog crossing a creek one day.

I clicked on this thread because my batteries in my camera went dead at a very bad moment - when I was sitting on the start / finish line trying to get shots of Tony accepting his 2002 Championship trophy:( . I did have a backup disposable camera. I'm waiting to see how the pics came out.

Those red top batteries are gel? The only thing I know from working with boat equipment is that the gels usually have lower cranking power. But, for a car, I am sure it would adequate.

A smaller 4x4 truck would still fulfill all of your requirements, and be a lot better off-road.
Pretty much any vehicle can handle "country roads, dirt, off highway . . " My 2x4 Toyota mini-truck goes on these all the time, without any problems.
If an excursion was the best 4x4 at an offroad meet, the other vehicles there couldn't have been that great.

Heh, heh. My 32 year old Mercedes sedan crawls up roads around this mountain that the big 4 wheel drive trucks hate. :r
