Hardware Raid-0\XP dynamic Disk Raid-0 Combo?

My Eyes er bleedin_n_my heads a spinnin
Been readin Raid-0 threads n pages for weeks now

The more I read the more confusing it gets!

I have two new WD800JBs, two old Fireball Plus AS 40 gig drives,
and a 5th 20 gig Quantum drive...for...."Disk Management Console Tweaks."

A Gigabyte GA7vaxp mainboard with Onboard Promise, and an old FastTrak100 pci card.

1. Is the Promise card better then the onboard version?

2. Can I create a hardware Raid-0 array as my primary partion;
then go into Disk Management Console and create a 2ndary
Dynamic Disk Array with my old Fireballs?


Perhaps I should just keep my old Fireballs for Storage/Backup and buy another WD800jb (only 80 bucks) for a hardware controlled 3 drive array.........or single ata WD800jb with dynamic disk array.......?

Yes - the FastTrack supports RAID combinations where the onboard Lite controller doesn't.

Personally, I would use RAID 1 for the JBs. You'll get faster read speeds with it and have some security against HDD failure. Stripe the Quantums, but don't put valuable data on that array.

Swanyway...create two separate arrays in the FastTrack BIOS. You won't be able to use both RAID controllers and the FastTrack is superior. Disable that onboard junk.

Say I have two bootable Win XP disks.........one standard ata in pull out carriage, and other hardware raid-0 quantums.........can either one that i choose as boot device read my XP-dynamic disk WD array?

XP Dynamic Array:
Via Primary: WD 80GB as Master, optical as slave if needed
Via Secondary: WD 80GB as Master, optical as slave if needed

Hardware Array with full bios mod:
Promise Primary: AS 40 as Master
Promise Secondary: AS 40 as Master........slave ata HD caddy with 20 gig Xp pro sys for disk management console\ my docs targeted folder.....for backup of crucial docs.
(Or would this drive have to go on one of my reg ata via slots? Forcing me to loose my Dvd Drive)
