I'm building a new machine, basically to game on 95% of the time...I've got the choise between the MSI 845G Max and the MSI KT3 Ultra2...one is P4 the other Athlon XP....anybody who can look at the specs on these and give me a recommendation go ahead. I'm spending around $100 on the processor so it's either a Celeron 2.0Ghz on the 845G or an Athlon XP 2100 on the KT3. But really I'm more torn on which board to pick between the two of them.

I would say go for the board that will allow your hardware to proform the best and at the best price. Go with the MSI KT3 Ultra2, if you get the other you are stuck with a slower chip.
So if you want to go the price proformace ratio then go with the KT3.

As much as I like Intel, the socket 478 celley is a dog. Your better off with the AMD setup if those are your only choices.

The P4 Celeron is a further crippling of the P4 as we know it, which already is a crippled version of the originally intended design. Avoid.

I'm with them - Athlon 2100+ and MSI KT3 Ultra2. I just slapped one of them together and it was a breeze. Very easy on the eyes too! The Ultra2 supports the new 166MHz Athlons as well, so it's somewhat "future-proof".
At just about any given price point, an Athlon wins - up to the top 10% that is. AMD has nothing to compete with the newest, most expensive P4s.

Thanks for all your input, after readin some reviews on the KT3 I really started liking the board, it seems alot of the Intel boards are not performing as well as they should be in terms of price vs. performance, so I'm starting to avoid the P4 now. Glad I checked a with the sysopt community before jumping into somethin I would have regretted. Later, I'm off to order my KT3, I'll let ya know how it comes out =)

The only problem I have with MSI boards is they don't let you run your vcore at 2.15 volts like epox does.
(not a very big problem, I know :D )
Yeah, MSI has the best price/performance/quality ratio of amd motherboard manufacturers. :)

Only the kt3 2, the others don't support a 1/5 divider.

It's okay, I made the same mistake. (except I'm stuck running with only a 1/4 divider, and you only stand corrrected :()
