I've been using telnet to access BBS's and it's evily slow - like text crawling by at a letter per 5seconds...
Is there anything i can do to speed it up?

One good idea, if you are using Window's Telnet.exe, then ditch it for a more reliable and higher-peformance client. I commonly use TerraTerm, available at download.com (http://download.cnet.com/downloads/0-10062-100-890547.html?tag=st.dl.10001-103-1.lst-7-3.890547) .
