When I open my documents and click on a file it can take anywhere from 30 seconds to a little over a minute for them to open. If I click on back that takes a long time too, even closing files can take almost a minute. This just started happening.I also lost my thumbnail view. I have my files set to webpage and I have defraged. I have a 40 gig 256MB celeron. OS: windows 98 second edition. I don't know much about anything! HAAAA Please help. Thanks, Julayne:confused:

No.. my hard drive is not making noises. I did a virus scan with Norton. No virus's. What do you mean reformat? You mean reinstall Windows??? How could this all of a sudden be happening? Thanks

Wait - download and use Spybot:

My bet is that this is SaveNow/Gator/RealOne/CometCursor gobbling up resources.

If the program BPB reccommended doesn't find anything. Download HDtach and run it. See if the drive prefromance has dropped off. Which could mean a bad cable or drive going out.

If anything looks wrong after running this program. Boot off of a 98 boot disk and run scandisk and make it a through to.

Bipolar, I installed Spybot and it worked, it found around 200 things, WOW. My files now open as fast as they use too. I still can't get the thumbnails to work, but I think I can live without them. I also installed HDtach as Philip suggested. I wish I would have ran HD before spybot to see the difference in times. Thanks Guys, as usual this site is the best. I appreciate all your time and knowledge. Julayne

Go ahead and insert the Win98 CD and run setup. You won't lose anything and it should fix the thumbnail problem.
You'll have to update Internet Explorer afterward.

Any chance for you to upgrade to WinXP or Win2K ?
