This CPU should debut around April 15, @ whopping $776/chip, then late May prices should fall to ~$670.

2GHz P4 CPU due out Q3!!

For more info. :http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/3/17940.html

With the new P4's coming prices on current CPU's should be decreasing to a price I can finally afford!

I wish I was as confident as u are...Intel is putting the pressure on...
as far as mobile chips go, the chips race is one again. AMD and Intel are both competing for the 1GHz mobile CPU release!!!

Didn't intel already win that race? I think the 1Ghz mobile processor is alrady out. And its not about confidence its just plain facts. There are a lot of websites with benchmark for you to look at. There is more to a processor than Mhz.

AMD Athlon 1200 will Beat a 2Ghz CPU

And where is the source you got this idea from?

I think voogru was just being overconfident!! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

I'm going to check on the release date of the new mobile 1GHz...will reply later

Big fat hairy deal.

Intel's 1.5 Ghz P4 is decisively beaten by a 1.33 Ghz Athlon in almost all benchmarks. Their 1.7 Ghz P4 will be answered by the 1.46 or 1.55 Ghz Athlon.

Nor will Intel be able to claim the performance crown back by using SSE2 instructions--when Hammer debuts in six months it'll offer full SSE2 support as well. Seems to me, that's right about the time true P4 optimized products might begin making it to mainstream...

Yes, but even with all this information, there are people who will still go out and buy intel, just because its intel.

Emcron,

You're right--there are. But that number is dropping every month, as AMD repeatedly demonstrates its ability to execute, out-price, and out-manuever Intel, marketwise.

Analysts have been predicting for two years that Intel was only 'one move away' from crushing AMD. At first I believed it. Now I'm laughing.

Actually, AMD might be "1 move away" from crushing Intel now, all they need to do is to release processors a bit faster, and put more pressure on Intel by releasing the processors faster, and but then again, Pentium 4 can scale up to huge clock speeds, whilst the Athlon core may not. Also AMD, still has a long way to go to success, they need to get their message out to the public, because Intel is "dominating" on informing the public about their processors (the 3 blue guys). As Dputiger said, Intel would have little to rely on when the Hammer's incorporate SSE2 Instructions. Wonder if Intel would make another SSE instruction set, named SSE3?? For the next generation CPUs.. Only time can tell..

Why do they bother? Nothing even uses 3/4 of the the 1.2 ghz yet... It MIGHT be handy for someone that's working on a random image creator that will eventually come up with every possible image/human been-yet to be/tree/animal/anything EVER (I have too much free time...) Or unless you suddenly want to start running all your games with the software renderer...
Why don't they start working on half-deacent monitors that last longer than 1 year under the conditions of being moved every weekend to and from somewhere 8 miles away?

Leverage. It's all about market leverage not performance.

I don't know what leverage Intel is using but I have seen a disturbing trend lately in that some major manufacturers and sales outlets seem to be moving away from AMD. I have even heard a rumor lately that Microsoft will no longer support AMD CPUs (e.g. 64bit Windows), but I hardly see that as feasible since AMD has always strived for compatibility...still there was that K6-2 350 bug (Windows bug -not hardware).

I guess these guys miss the days of high profit margins on systems.

That's just a rumor. In fact, MS just announced support for the 64-bit Hammer with the next version of Windows.

Remember though, 'support' from Microsoft just means optimization coding. Windows will run on AMD regardless.

Considering NEC, Micron, and IBM have signed on to carry Athlon-based servers, I'd say AMD is slowly but surely making inroads into the server market.
