Is there a stable forum software that doesn't involve learning database code or other languages? One that isn't cheesy like Beseen forums.
We're using Snitz right now, but it is a beast to change for us.
Thankyou.

this forum is using perl based Ultimate Bullerin Board, however you might want to look at vbullertin, you can see an example at http://asdf.madpimp.com it uses mysql and is extremely easy to configure

I have done some research on nice (free) software, here's what I've got:
www.ezboard.com (http://www.ezboard.com) big ads, but you don't have to host it yourself, you also haven't got full control.
www.phpbb.com/credits.php (http://www.phpbb.com/credits.php) looks a lot like UBB.
www.bbhacks.com (http://www.bbhacks.com) (Blazeboard) also looks a lot like UBB and vBullitin.
www.yabb.org (http://www.yabb.org) (Yet another Bulletin Board) really bad name, but looks okay.
EZboard is really easy to set up. Blazeboard should also be really easy to set up, like EZboard you only have to sign up and do some customization.

ubb 6.0 is a disaster, ezboard got some lame advertisement, however I have not seen the rest you mentioned, there are ALOT of BBS out there, like dcboard or aspboard, just whatevers.

I just think that flat line database sucks compared to a REAL database based.

Keep an eye on www.phpbb.com (http://www.phpbb.com)
PHP + mysql... pretty good board right now (no way on earth could it handle SysOpt right now, but it handles small and medium size boards very well), but version 2.0 should be quite good (and using templates for full customization). It is amazingly easy to set up... took me a half hour my first time.
I'd personally stay away from UBB. I've had my fill of 3 minute searches and 5 hour reindexings. Get something hooked to a database and go with that. vBulliten or wwwthreads for serious, commercial boards and phpBB for the rest.

To what extent are these free forums customisable though ?.

voogru, I bet you "hacked" your ubb 6 for newer and better features? I personally thingk that WE as the end user should not have to tweak any script, all the neat stuff should come with it. one question: ubb6 STILL uses flatline database?

This does not directly answer the original question, but it's useful info
www.scubadiving.com/talk/list.php?f=1 (http://www.scubadiving.com/talk/list.php?f=1) ( SCUBA board )AKA Diver to Diver is running phorum through php on a ?mySQL or other SQL database. I think it's the best message board I've seen. Unlike this board, the format is wide-open - political posts, diving tech and jokes all on the same screen. It has an option to View All Threads or Collapse Threads. No editing option. php, phorum are open source and free. php is available for NT and linux. Can't tell you about phorum.
bbs.gwrra.org ( Goldwing BBS ) is running discus on NT. Like this board, it's divided into topics. It gives you the option to edit your threads after you type but before you post. No after-post editing
www.billiardsdigest.com/ccboard (http://www.billiardsdigest.com/ccboard) ( Pool and Billiards ) has some really bizarre software - it gives you a dozen ways to view the threads, but no way to keep the threads intact. I constantly found myself looking for the original post in a thread. Gave up. A good example of how NOT to do it.

www.hotscripts.com (http://www.hotscripts.com) (large archive of Perl and PHP scritps) www.ikonboard.com (http://www.ikonboard.com) (easy to install, take some tinkering to get customized for looks) www.yabb.org (http://www.yabb.org) (I've used it before it was okay) www.ezboard.com (http://www.ezboard.com) (I use it now and vist boards hosted on it frequantly, you can change the colors and tons of other stuff with some tweaking and experimenting. Addmining it is easy as well.)
I've never really like UBB my self.
