Incompatibility issues may have prompted IBM to put a stop to the production of some hard drives in its DTLA series. An IBM representative confirmed at CeBIT that the company is aware of the problems many users have with using the hard drives. However, the representative asserts that it is an issue with the controllers and not the hard drives themselves.

"(The representative) told me that the disks are fine and they work flawlessly in computers from IBM," says one CeBIT visitor, "I had two 45GB drives myself, one failed and a second makes strange noises. Then I have got a 30GB which develops bad sectors (advice by IBM: Make a low-level format, this is nothing to worry about). I know about three other people with defective 45gig drives and there are many posts in the storage review (http://www.storagereview.com/) forum."

The controllers which may have difficulties include the Intel BX PCH, the AMD-750 southbridge, the KT133A southbridge (VT82C686B, note that many "AMD 760 chipset" boards actually use this southbridge instead of the AMD 765), and the Highpoint HP370 (the RAID controller found on the popular Abit KT7-RAID and KT7A-RAID). It is probably best to get a Maxtor DiamondMax instead when using one of those controllers.

What?!

I've got (2) Deskstar 75GXP 45G DTLAs and haven't had any problems or strange noises (though who could tell with that FOP...). Been running several months on a BX6-2 w/Promise ATA-100 PCI controller, and now three weeks on my new KT7A. I hope this isn't true.

Don't have time now.. the link to the Storage Review thread (http://198.76.30.88/jive/sr/thread.jsp?forum=1&thread=11453) .

Anyonehaving any problems?

how ever, ibm makes alot of failed drive for those 2 model, 30 and 45gb, i used to work at a store that sell them, alot of RMA for those, but when they work, they work good

I guess it's assembly problem, because some of the customer said the power molex pins on the HD fell out

I have a Deskstar 75GXP 30G and after a few monts it had some bad sectors. A couple of weeks ago I formatted it (low-level) to remove the bad sectors.
Is the disk actually reliable or not? Do I have to keep in mind that the drive will have some more bad sectors in the next couple of months???

Ive gone through 4 45GB 75GXP's and (2 on KT7A-RAID (RAID0), 1 on MSI Pro2a, 1 on some ECS Via P3 board), and 2 30GB 75GXP's (1 on KT7-RAID (on Raid controller), and 1 on a BX6-2).
That compiles the HPT370 Controller, the Via 686B controller, The Via 686A controller, and the BX's native controller, which includes most of the popular harddrive controllers.
All have worked flawlessly, and I recommend these drives and no other to customers and friends. This may have to change if I hear anything else about these, but no other drive can match the price or performance of these drives.

they probably made a few batch that failed. other than that, I would also recommended to buy ibm drives
