i have a small lan with 5 comps linked. all through a lnksys 5 port hub and a cable modem. three comps are running winxp, the 4th one is running win me and the 5th one win 2000.

now what i want to know is why all the comp's are using the cable modems's ip to the outside world when browsing

i though only routers did this. they all use the 192.xxx.xxxx.xxx locally. but when they browse the internet they use the cable modem's ip addy

i have comcast as my isp .

any idea's

yep. hubs are passive. if you're running ICS, then the ICS server is acting as a router.

that couls be is so i could use a hub and ics to act as the router .

how do i check to see if i have ics on

just look in the back of each computer. the ICS server has 2 network cards, 1 for the private network and 1 to connect to your ISP.

you can check each system in the network properties, but it's probably easier just to look in the back of the case.

Here's more info on ICS:
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp_ics/

ICS is a very stripped down version of NAT. One NIC is configured with the data from the ISP, the other is configured with the local IP of 192.168.0.1. When a client goes through the ICS server, it's data is being forwarded as if it was coming from the ICS server. When the ICS server received data, it forwards it back to the client.
