I have a clone computer - Motherboard w/SiS 630 Rev 33 chipset and I want to install a new video card. It's an Asylum PCI 64Mb nVidia GeForce4 MX420.
When I put the board in and try to boot it doesn't do anything. Monitor is black and computer won't finish boot.
Here are some other specs if required:
RAM 512Mb
667 Mhz
American Megatrends BIOS
I'm at my wits end.
Please help
Thanks

Welcome to Sysopt! :t

In your bios setting, there is an option to set the amount of memory to use for the onboard video, called System Share Memory Size, or something like that. Try setting it to 0 (zero). This has worked on some other motherboards with shared system ram (onboard video).

Are you sure the motherboard does not have a jumper to enable and disable onboard video?..some do, and some do not. I had a Soyo board a couple of years ago and the only way to get that one running with a PCI card was to go into the bios, set the video from AGP (onboard video was AGP) to PCI then when in Windows, go to device manager where both video systems were still shown, and go to the properties of the onboard video and put a check on the box to disable in all hardware profiles. The onboard video still showed up in Device Manager, and had a big red X on it...but the monitor was running very nicely on the PCI card...and still is.

Go into the BIOS. It will say, if I am not mistaken on-board graphics memory (I believe). Set it to 0 or none depending on what it is in your BIOS. I set mine to none when I got a new gpx card and the onboard does not even appear in the Device Manager and that is even with the hidden devices being shown. That is just to back up omega.:t

if you use a PCI card the onbaord will still show...something about those SiS mobos... if you use an AGP card, the onboard will automatically be disabled. Just set the shared memory to the lowest possible (8mb?) and then boot up windows. Disable the onboard through device manager and just run your geforce4mx. Too bad, the mem you dedicate to the video will still be lost :( get an AGP card is all i can say.:r

PS: not all AGP cards work in it...a geforce2mx works, but all kyro cards do not. Chances are, newers cards do not work either, good luck! :t

The first thing to do is check the mobo manual if it came with one. Look to see if you need to disable the onboard video by going into the BIOS and/or by relocating a jumper on the mobo! Also check to see if the AGP slot supports 2X or 4X AGP cards, there is a difference in the voltages used by the cards depending on their mode setting!(2X or 4X)

Reason for stating the above is the fact that not all mobos are designed the same and they all have their little quirks which require different approaches to make them work properly! Best method is to consult your motherboard manual for the specifics on how-to install an AGP card, there it will give the correct procedures.:)

It's been a long time since I had my SIS598 w/630 chipset.
In the bios there's a setting for APG or PCI graphics, the AGP is for the on board graphic an the PCI setting is for disabling the onboard graphic if using a PCI vid card!

Here's a good link for the SIS based MB: http://www.stud.fernuni-hagen.de/q3998142/pcchips/

Thanks for all your suggestions. No luck yet though.

Where is the on-board graphics shown in the Device Manager?
Display adaptor or Sound, video and game controllers or system devices.

The video card manual says the card wants to use IRQ #11 but this is being used by the on-board audio (tried disabling but no luck)

Do you think my problem is with the IRQ settings?

Help!!

It should be under display adapters. If you try to uninstall it from there it will just reinstall it on startup. So there is no sense in doing that. I don't know how to help ya or I would. Sorry my man.

I just got an ATI Radeon 7000 PCI, I have an intergrated graphics card that I am told I have to disable first, I disabled it in systems manager but I am still unable to boot with monitor connected to card, I booted once with it my conputer and was able to install drivers for it.

I have no idea what BIOS are or a jumper is. Or what my motherboard is, my graphics card chipset is 82810E and is made by Intel.

Any help would be greatly appecaited.

I just recently install an ATI branded 7000 PCI card (no AGP on ECS P5SS-Me). There was no means of disabling the on board video in the bios. Disabled (not deleted) the SIS graphics adapter in device manager & loaded latest drivers from ATI. Working just fine now.

I learned this one from reading the posts on SysOpt.

Good luck.

PS - Don't forget to move the monitor cable to your new card.

No, and don't let anyone make you believe that. PCI and AGP devices get their IRQ lines auto-assigned by BIOS, and may even share them with others.

The integrated VGA will stay active. Enter BIOS and choose whether you want the PCI or (internal) AGP VGA to become the primary display. THEN plug your PCI card and move the monitor cable there.
