First off make sure you have all up-to-date drivers. That is an easy first step.

Then if you want XP to run alittle faster and lighter then from the start menu go to run and type "msconfig" (leave out the ""). From there go to the Startup tab and deselect everything that isn't nessesary. You'll have to restart but windows should feel quicker and more responsive.

Make sure you defrag you're HD to speed that up.

You can go under the control panel and select "System" then go to the "Advance" tab and then click on the Performance Settings Icon. Select the Advance tab on the new window and go down to the Virtual Memory. Make sure that it is on Custom Setting and make the Max and Min as large as you can (Mine is 1500).

disable the fisher-price look... apparently it speeds it up but so far i've not noticed a difference.

xp=more ram.

If you can afford it.....do it.

My games run MUCH better now. I have turned off my pf.....it is all RAM now no virtual ram reading from the hdd which is MUCH slower.

You might want to turn off some of those services that XP has on by default. The best guide for doing this is at http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm

Many, many people have used these configurations. I do and it frees up a hella lot of RAM. My advice would be to stick with the "Safe" column.
