My friend is a huge intel fan and keeps telling me that amd is incompatible cause it's not x86. He claims its picky about the memory also. "Intel has more knowledge behind them." blah blah blah
Need something to tell him. Some facts.

AMD has been around since 1969 or so. And they were also partners with Intel at one time, I think.
I have installed Crucial memory in a PII and a Athlon system, no problems with the memory in either system.

I don't believe you'll find a valid argument that states that AMDs are 100% "compatible". There have been too many instances where problems that hit AMD didn't hit Intel. If they were identical, what would be the point?
Does that make them worse? No. AMD optimizes code diffentntly, and in some cases, that optimazation can make their performance better/faster/whatever.
Does that make them better? No. Just different.
They, as Intel, try to adhere to standard conventions, but both also try to stretch the limit. This brings in timing issues, etc.
Just like 2000 vs Linux, Ford vs Chevy, and on and on, don't expect any argument you come up with to change any minds. You probably wouldn't change your mind based on what he says, either.
If you like what you have and he likes what he has, who really cares about Intel vs AMD. Seems like no one is happy with what they have unless they can "educate and convert" anyone who doesn't agree.
I'd recommend you just go have a beer... but don't argue over domestic vs import.

Oh man.... my poor Intel processor(s) are cringing already in anticipation of the beating that Intel is about to recieve. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif
When it's all over and the dust settles, I still won't be "upgrading" to AMD though, but not for the ridiculous reasons that your friend gave.
"amd is incompatible cause it's not x86" ??? What the heck does that mean???

the memory can be only incompatible with the motherboard, not the CPU, correct me if I am wrong, for example I noticed MicroQ mem dont work well in CUSL2

I think he meant AMD was not x86 compatible because there has to be at least a 10% difference in the CPU and chipset, or Intel could sue due to a patent infringement. I think that's what he meant.

How about, AMD costs less than Intel.
Thats one of the things that converted me over to AMD.

I'm off to buy a Cyrix III. Yeah, it sucks (my definitive review), but its fun to support the complete underdog alternative. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif
Back in my twisted sense of reality, I guess I've had my sarcastic fun for this morning. Off to catch a couple of hours sleep before MST3K comes one. Yeah, I don't have life, but then again, you probably don't either if your reading this at 6:35am EST on a Saturday morning. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
BTW, more about RC5.
