Is Barton or Opteron going to be socket A?

The hammers are suppostly going to be 754pin or smothin like that. But barton I think is socket A

Agree, Barton s/b the last socket A processor.

I am about to purchase another board for my personal system. I currently use a Soyo board with a KT266A chipset, and was moving to a KT400. I have heard really good things about the Nforce II, but haven't heard any specific board model numbers that would make me choose over the KT400. The board I plan on buying is a CHAINTECH Deluxe 7VJL (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.asp?description=13-152-010) $125 from Newegg. I normally hold onto my boards for about a year before upgrading.
I am a little disappointed that the socket A will no longer be with us. Does anyone have a guess as to when it will be phased out?

If you're only thinking of 1 year, then you s/b fine. Unless AMD kills off Barton prematurely, kinda like what Intel did with the Tualatin, there s/b incremental increases in speed for a period of time which should keep socket A around for at least another year. Initially Hammer will probably be very expensive and targeted at the server market. I wouldn't plan on building a Hammer desktop system anytime soon, at least not at a reasonable cost.

I'm gonna have to agree with these other guy's. From everything I've read they're going to kill duron production but continue production on the XPs as their "Budget Processor". I don't know much about the other new processor. I did read that the hammer will be in a 754 pin socket or something like that I guess this is supposedly a breakthrough cuz the Itaniums are only in like a 603 pin socket. But as far as I know the Xps are here to stay. They're coming out with the 2700s and 2800s soon I think. I don't know for sure though, maybe you should go talk to someone at AMDs tech support online. Although I'm not reallly sure why you want to upgrade your board right now any way the one you have sounds good. Maybe just hold onto it until you know what AMDs thinking.

This is far too complicated

Barton Hammer saddo AMD's Ville

Why not call them "Nice" names like Pootles & Snowdrop ??? :)

Dont get a KT400 board. The KT333 outperform them.

Get the Kt400a when it turns up - and yes - barton will be the last of the SOA's

I really appreciate everyone's input. I am just getting axious. I keep hearing about serial ATA, 166 FSB and have been thinking about raid for about six months. It is easy to be nocked off the top of the line in this market, especially when every quarter brings something new. Though it does seem like things have slowed down a little this past year. Motherboard makers are throwing in so many addtions into thier boards (smart card readers, raid, top rated sound, serial ata), that the consumer really is starting to have a choice. It's not just about speed anymore.

xeon is 603-pin, itanium is something-pin,.... but barton, yes, will be the last of the XPs...

AMD clinged onto a socket for a record period of time! For something that is based on pga370... to extend into 2003... 4yrs!

Actually, AMD also stuck with socket 7 for sometime after Intel had abandoned it. Over the last 10 years or so the only short lived AMD processor format was slot A (unlike Intel  )

aewithro1,

I personally wouldn't upgrade a good kt266a mobo in favor of any other flavor be it Kt333, kt400, nforce1 or 2, or any SiS. That is unless you're having 'issues' with your current kt266a board. I tell you what, I loved my A7v266-E. I wish it were still alive.

Were I you, I'd only invest into something when it's apparent where your bottleneck is. Perhaps a CPU + VC + memory upgrade instead? I just don't see the point, that is, unless it's as different as night & day. Help me understand.

cheers,
