I thinking about building a comp. I am wondering if I should buy this (http://www.samsclub.com/eclub/main_shopping.jsp?mt=a&n=0&BV_SessionID=_SC_1053099978.1036863681_CS_&BV_EngineID=ccdfadcgjkhlkhecfkfcfkjdgoodflf.0&coe=0&oidPath=0%3a-15464%3a-16203%3a657124) . Is it worth it??? Thanks.

Not too bad. Might want to replace video card through. Pretty cheap too...

If not that, how 'bout this. (http://www.samsclub.com/eclub/main_shopping.jsp?coe=0&oidPath=0%3a-15464%3a-16203%3a635001&mt=a&n=0&BV_SessionID=_SC_1908026012.1036893356_CS_&BV_EngineID=cccladcgjkhihlgcfkfcfkjdgoodfkg.0) If you can't get this go to www.samsclub.com. Click on Computers & Software, CPU Components, then click on Stratitec CPU Builders Desktop Starter System. Do any of you think this is overclockable???

embj
11-09-2002, 08:59 PM
Or check all of them out at www.stratitec.com. Then go to CPU Builders.

I would say no. The key info is the following:

"To complete your starter system add:

AMD Athlon XP, Athlon or Duron CPU
IDE Hard Disk Drive
PC133 or PC2100 (DDR266) RAM
CD-RW or CD-ROM/DVD drive
Monitor / Display
Linux OS is included or add your preferred operating system"

This indicates that the $300 is just for the barebones and you have to pay more to finish the system. You might as well build your own and get somewhat more up-to-date components (e.g. GF3 or 4 rather than 2, SiS 745 or 746 rather than 735 etc.)

Ok, I will price on how much it will cost to build another one. I already have a processor, Win XP, 17" Monitor, 2 40gb HD's, a spare CD Burner, & maybe next week for I will get a Sony DVD burner.:t

In the long run, you'll be much happier building it yourself. Trust me, I know. Don't be intimidated by building a computer - we can help you and it's not as hard as you'd think.

Ok then. I am looking a mobo that will support a T'bird 1.4ghz through about an XP 2.4ghz , SDRAM and DDR(not simultaneously), good support, frequent BIOS updates, easily overclockable, & many BIOS settings.
I want a case that has room for about 4 5.25" drives, 4 HD's, 2 3 1/2" drives, 6 PCI slots, 6 USB slots.

Also, I don't think it is hard. I actually think that it is quite easy. I just don't want to spend a lot of $$$$.

www.nutrend.com go to custom build

No go. Get a MOBO with integrated sound. What, maybe $85, case and PSU, good quality, maybe $75. The video card would be too weak for me, just a waste of money since I'd get a 4200, that MX is pretty cheap anyway.

embj

Naw, I really don't want integrated sound. I really want just a cheap sound card that is like $10 cause I have a cable that has a sound card end(whatever it's called) and and RCA on the end of it. I put a Y-adapter on it and I can get stereo sound out of my four speakers.

I really want to buy one that has just a built-in NIC and whatever else I said above.

Yeah, that card is weak. I have an ATI Radeon 7000 with 64mb DDR. It is a much better card.

I really don't think that I am gonna buy it.

embj

Well, anyway what would be the best mobo to get for under $80 according to my specifications above???

you can do that with intergrated sound, im listening to music through four speakers.. two PC speakers and a stereo system.

I know I could but, I just want something different other than integrated sound. I do that on this POS HP that has integrated sound.

intergrated sound is good nowadays, and it saves on your PCI slots which may keep heat in between the slots.

How is the AC97 compared to the Creative Sound Blaster Live! 5.1???

well, ok AC sound is ****, but some intergrated are .

and there is no way i'd spend £150 on a stupid card thats not even a graphics card.

That first one you pointed to, the Premium Starter System for Advanced 3D Gaming, has a modified ECS K7S5A. So, if you want to build on a K7S5A, you might as well get one for $56 at newegg, or some other place using pricewatch. It also lists a geforce2 mx, which is hardly advanced 3d gaming hardware.

The straitec starter system motherboard looks like a K7S5A. Looks like the K7S5A is what you want, since you have pointed to 2 starter systems with that motherboard. The straitec starter system comes with a S3 Savage vid card, again hardly fit for a gamer.

Buy yourself a K7S5A, a Geforce4 ti4200 ($109 for 64mb on pricewatch), and a good case with a good power supply. If you think a gf4ti4200 is too much, get a gf3 ti200 (64mb for $69 on pricewatch).

Alright lets see.
-I could get an ECS K7S5A for $57 @ www.nutrend.com
-A Sound Blaster Live 5.1 OEM for $33.95 @ www.nutrend.com
-A ATI Radeon 9000 128mb on eBay for about $100.
-A case that comes with a 300w power supply @ www.nutrend.com for $20
- A floppy for $12 @ www.nutrend.com

That only costs $222.95. That actually isn't that bad.
And really that is all I need. I already have the rest. Also, what should I use for cooling??? Thx.

I would't buy that ATI Radeon 9000. It's much worst than GF3TI Get GF3++ If you want a ATI card get at least 8500LE or better.
$75 for the 64 megs ATI RAdeon 8500LE @ newegg.com

Which case are you thinking of? I didn't see a $20 case that came with a power supply. The Raidmax Model 208 is $20, but doesn't come with a power supply. Also comes with no fans. I bought one of these at Fry's Electronics (they called it Fudin) for $40 on sale (regular price $60) with a 350 watt power supply, a 60mm fan, and 5 80mm fans.

Oh, my bad. I was looking at the FoxConn which was $31. I will look around for another one @ Fry's.

Anyone have any idea for a case that is like this:
http://65.119.30.131/images/11-156-011-01.JPG

?????? Thx.

I will have to buy it online. Around here the only place that I can think of that would have something like that is Best Buy and they want $60 for their cheapest case. :(

I think you'd be making a mistake getting a board with SDRAM and DDR support, because the best socket A boards out there now are DDR only. Also, don't bother with a Tbird, get an XP, even the slowest one available will be better than a Tbird.

embj
11-10-2002, 09:23 PM
The reason I am going to use a t'bird is because that is what I have in this one that I am using right now. I want to use one with SDRAM & DDR because I don't have the $$$ right now to buy it. I already have 768mb SDRAM and that is what I was going to put in it.

embj
11-10-2002, 09:26 PM
How much do you think that I could get for selling the 512mb stick of Generic Samsung PC133 that I just bought brand new (OEM) 2 weeks ago from faustusa69 (something like that anyway)? And what about a stick of 256mb of Kingston ValueRam that I bougt about 1 1/2 months ago from Office Max??

It seems that you are planning to upgrade your machine not building another one so buying them by the bundle instend you can by them seprately. buy mobo, chasis with psu and video card. that all u seem to need so far. Just upgrade the parts that you need.

I have a question for you Optimus Prime. I want to get my sound to play through my stereo and my PC Speakers. I have my stereo with 4 speakers hooked up through the speaker port on the back of my comp. How can I hook up my PC w/ my stereo and my comp. speakers??? I tried to plug them into line-out and it stopped playing all together. What have you done to do this??? Thx.
