The way I understand it you will need 2 drives. First you install dos on the primary. Then a boot manager. System commander is good so is LILO. Earlier versions of dos simply installed by first formating your hdd with system then creating a directory called dos and simply coying the files from the floppies. later versions started an install aplet at bootup. Couldn't be simpler.

Now Winme hook up second drive as primary disconect original drive and do a standard windows setup. Once done make the windows drive slave make your dos drive primary after boot up to primary IDE Load your dos CDrom software that you got with your drive. If you do not have the software do a search on the shareware sights you will find programs that will cover most Common cddrives.

Hope this helps. Its been a while since Iv'e been in dos. Thanks for the memories.

to install dos on a new hard drive format with system files.

A:\format C: -s i believe

then when you restart it should bring you to a command prompt and your finished.

Try "a:>format c: /s" from a win95/98 boot floppy command prompt. For cd-rom support, you can copy the driver required to your hard drive, then edit config.sys and autoexec.bat to point to it (you'll also need mscdex.exe).

My understanding is that pure DOS cannot be run on a system that is using FAT 32.. I mean pure DOS here. That would involve setting a partition less than 2.1 gigs..formatting with a DOS disk, and installing from the floppies..all three of them. You then add CD support with a CD driver for your particular make. Anything other than that is not pure DOS and you may as well run a DOS window under Win9x...

sexy, however, after I did what I did, win2k refuse to be booted, no I did not over write the partrition, I format c: /s on the 2nd partrition (it is c: because ntfs is unreadable in dos) anyways, I "accidently" deleted my win2k partition while talking to my girlfriend whom was mad, ughhhhh...

anyway, I am reinstall win2k as I type this message
