How many of you just leave your system totally alone while burning cds?
I have a PIII 800 @ 936, 384 MB PC133, and 60GB of RAID0 hdd space. My burner is a 12 month old HP 8250i (not burn-proof, 4/4/24). I rarely burn a coaster and I use CloneCD, Easy CD 4, Nero 5.0.4.4, and CDRWin 3.8d (I use them for different tasks).
The reason I ask is because my colleagues at work willnot use their systems while they are burning. period. Right now, for instance, on my system, I am browsing the web in 3 windows (IE5), hosting an FTP server, DLing from an FTP, and running Napster with 40 allowed DLs at one time enabled. Not to mention my RC5 and firewalls. And I still rarely get a coaster. Do you guys experience the same? or am I just lucky to not have problems?
Thanks
Dave

With my old Iomega Zip650 CD-RW, I would surf, but rarely would I do anything else while burning. Coaster were "few and far between", I just restricted how much I did while burning as a precaution.
I now have a PlexWriter with burn-proof and I've tried (without success) to make a coaster... but I just can't do it. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

I would leave it alone...
0 - Zero - Null - Nada - No - Nothing - Keine - Nó Coasters. Not even one.
Now I have the burner in my "server" and it sits by itself (shares the internet) anyway.

I’ve utilized other application while burning a CD without hindrance to the burn session. In all candor though, the majority of the time when I’m set to burn, I time the event with something I need to do away from the computer. I guess somehow I’ve got it stuck in the back of my head that the burn process somehow needs to make use of the entire system to be successful.
I’d chalk it up to the same idiosyncrasy that compels me to get queasy and feel nauseous if I know that there are onions in my food except in the case of onion rings, which I eat at least once a week and absolutely love.

I will burn at a lower rate if I am doing other things when burning but have always continued to use my system when burning with no problems
I have a HP 9310i and will burn at 8x when using computer and 10x when not using computer
I have a Plextor 8/4/32 and burn at 8x and do things as I usually would do... I don't let the system sit.

Well, I just got my long-awaited Plextor 16/10/40A and I love it! I can burn a CD-R in 14 minutes flat while surfing the Net! If you're looking for a new CD burner that will let use use your comp while u burn, go with Plextor! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/biggrin.gif

I guess, even though I'm using a Plex12/10/32, old "internal programming" prompts me to leave the system alone while its burning. As fast as the RW is, however, I don't really mind.
In short, I generally leave the system alone while burning.

...hummm...My Sony CDRW os only 8x/4x/32x but it only takes 9-10 minutes to burn an 80 minute CD...PIII650@748 w/256 pc133...it's on my 2nd IDE and only runs ATA33...seems like a 16x would be a lot faster than mine...
...anyway, I do most anything I want while burnning and out of a 100 or more CD's I've had 2 failures...the only trouble I have is my USB printer sometimes has "failure to comunicate" errors while I'm burning..(maybe someone has a tip there) so I have to wait untill I'm done burning to print my lables...I do set them all up so I can just click & print when I'm done burning...
...I'm pretty happy with my $99.00 burner http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
wow sucks to be alot of u guys, i got the tdk velocd and i can burn at 12x while doing whatever i please, even play a game. its got the same buffer under run error protection as plextor so i am very happy. it'll catch up to ya later though when u go to look in ur wallet!!

i also have a Plextor 8/4/32...i normally use it to burn music from mp3's using nero. when it was in my old computer (K6 233@270, 64mb ram) i would have to lower the burn to 4x and not do anything...with my new system (TBird 750@850, KT7-Raid - no raid yet, and 128mb ram) i can burn at full speed and still do stuff while waiting. i think it all depends on how well and what kind of computer you utilize

I only have a 4x4x32 teac - I guess I'm superstisious (spell check?) - I don't do anything while burning, by my 13 yr old usually has about 3 other things going on -
never had a coaster (either of us)

I've got you all beat: an ancient 2X CD burner that's hooked up with an internal ISA scuzzy. I let my system sit and turn off every single possible thing while burning, but then again, you guys didn't get your burners free from the trash.
Oh, and I still get a coaster occationally, but as cheap as CDR's are, all it costs is 60 cents and little more time.

Well, I got a HP CD-Writer plus, and I was burning a CD and forgot about my automatic virus scan stuff from norton. It actually ran 5 minutes before I noticed (it buffer underran and made a coaster) That was with a 233mmx. And at UDMA 4 (66). 4x write. What I'd really like to do is get a dual cpu setup and virus scan while burning and getting e-mail and surfing the web while benchmarking quake...

I do all my usual tasks when burning a CD, "snailing" the net (because of my primitive modem and its laughable speeds), listening to MP3s, using ICQ and AIM, I just don't do anything that is CPU intensive, such as games. Almost burned 50 cds so far on my Ricoh 12x10x32x With 8x DVD http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif and only 1 coaster so far...

I have not tried running other proggy's while burning, so I could not say if my system would give me any coasters because of it (AMD450 w/ 256meg). I prefer to allow the burn to go uninterrupted.

With my older burner HP 8x4x32 on a PIII 450@558, I would leave the system alone. However, once I got my new burner, Plextor 12x10x32, on same system, I do pretty much whatever I want.

I have an old 4x burner. I usually do something else, like take a shower or sleep when I'm burning. I'll usually only burn while I'm eating or doing something else.
But I do other things if I happen to feel the need for burning at other times.

The only thing that puts me off doing certain things whilst burning is if that program crashes, I could end up with a coaster. Generally, if I'm burning @ home (HP 4X), I'll do anything other than play games or surf. At work, the old Philips SCSI 2X just keeps plodding away.... and cos it's only 2X, it takes ages, so I've got to burn in the background.

I leave it alone. So far, over two years of burning and not one coaster yet.

I usually leave it alone, but I think that's more because I used to have a 2x generic burner and I would get a lot of coasters that way.
I upgraded to a Sony 8x burner and really just stayed in the habit. I've never really tried multitasking because of old habits.

Hehehehe, I got a plex (8 4 32A) and have burned coasters but was my fault...some games just aren't supposed to be copied...uhhh I mean backed up...hehehe. Any ways I usually let my comp sit. However I am getting dual p3 800's (Slot 1) and I have win2k advanced server so when I get it all together I won't have a problem not leaveing my computer alone when I burn http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

using ur syetm ehile burning with a nn burn proof writer doesn't necessarily mean u should get coasters.....
coasters happen only when the writer doesn't get enough data to keep with the burning process. This is a rare possibility in ur case,
First of all.... u have a SLowwwwww writer.
two, ur system is pretty good (config)

when im burning i always leave it alone but im running k6-2 w198mb and an older burner 2x. if i have to many windows open i get a buffer underrun. whats "burn proof"?

I always leave the computer when I'm burning... With my winmodem, I find that if I'm knocked offline for any reason when I'm surfing, it always freezes the entire system for a second or so -- just long enough to cause a guaranteed buffer underrun... So I never surf.
My parents' old computer, a P1-200Mhz 32MB ram, can hardly make it through a burn session with NOTHING else running -- I make a point to close *everything* in task manager, turn off McAfee and all screensavers, don't even so much as touch Windows Explorer while it's going. And, I've noticed it *seems* to work better if the cd burner's temp working file is on a different partition than the files I'm putting on the CD, though maybe there's no scientific basis for that. And, for some reason 2x speed works much better than 1x (old burner -- Memorex 1622 2x2x6). And... I only use CD-RW's with it, cause it almost always never works on the first try -- ugh. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Loki515, if you're getting a lot of coasters copying cd's direct off the cd-rom, *definitely* copy to the hd first. The buffer underruns occur because your system isn't feeding the burner data fast enough, and your cd-rom is probably much slower than the hd.
Also, try shutting down everything you don't need if you have a relatively slow computer -- as I mentioned in my other post, turn off the virus scanner, screensaver, Microsoft Findfast, everything in task manager you don't need. And, disconnect your modem connection beforehand, that helps for me.

When I first had a burner we has a 233mmx with 64meg of ram and win95 doing things while burning would almost always cause a buffer underrun.
So now even though I have a p2 300 with 256meg or ram and win2k, the idea of not using the system has stuck.

I turn my computer off when I burn CDs
I have the Plexy 12-10-32a and Ill work normally when burning everyday stuff, But if I'm doing a music disk for the Alpine in the car, Its 1x, no other apps, and I'll go do something productive.
