I set up a lan with 4 computers and they all can browse the internet however i can not see any of the computers or share files with them. i have a cable modem shared with 4 computers using a hub. all computers are using mshome as thier workgroup

and all comps have win xp as thier OS.

what could be the problem

You have to add each user with password to each XP machine or log on with the same account on all four. Don't forget to disable the firewalls in the advanced properties for TCP/IP on each unit.

It's security, d00d!

Are you sure that the firewall is disabled? The Networking Wizard will enable it by default if you're using Internet Connection Sharing.

Tell me - the others cannot see the shares on the gateway or the gateway can't see the others?

You have to add the gateway PC's logon account to the other PCs.

Create a new User account on each PC (except the gateway, naturally). Do this in Control Panel > Users and Passwords/User Accounts. Be sure to include the password and lock it.

i did that added a user name on each computer had already done that i can see me and only me.

when i click on one of the other computers and it only shows me as the connecting computer which they connect to the internet.

they are all using the 192.168.0.xxx ip addy

i am using the cable modem ip addy and using the 192.168.0.xxx ip addy as the gate way .

all computers are using the same workgroup

Let's get this this perfectly clear.

Answer these questions yes or no:

1. Can you PING each PC from all PCs?

2. Is the username and password for the gateway logon added to each other PC?

3. Are you using a Cable/DSL router?

4. Do any of the PCs have fixed IPs?

One more question:

If you have a router, why are you using a gateway PC? The router is the gateway.

What you got there is perfectly normal

since all your 4 PCs are connected OUT to the World

you don't have a LAN

all your PCs are in a WAN type of enviroment

since each of them are using your ISP DNS and your ISP IP addresses

you can still Share Files
but you just wont be able to Browse them

since it TIMES OUT when the RPC call takes too long waiting for the feedback to comeback out from the internet

You have 2 choices

GET A ROUTER!!! or MAP the drives to your other computer by their FQDN

FQDN = Fully Qualify Domain Name
which requires an
A record and a PTR record
which is used for forward and reverse lookup
and obviosly you must enabled Printer and File sharing

which mean your computers have a welcome mat layed out for Hackers

and no you cannot put a firewall

if you use firewall you wont be able to access your own files

so again

get a ROUTER so you can have a LAN and WAN after the router

Yes - get a router.
