Found this and thought I would pass it on. Gonna try it myself. Anyhow its a mixture of 98 and ME. So you get the better dial-up/explorer etc. from ME but keep the stability of 98se. Check it out!

I wonder if it's possible to create a Windows 98 install CD with some or all of those ME files already on it. That would be nice to have handy.

I finsihed these changes a couple of days ago. I got one error that stated "COMCTL32.DLL Can not start. Check the file to determine the problem." I replaced the COMMCTRL.DLL that I had replaced from WinME with the 98 version (the original) and everything works. I installed updates until Windows Update had nothing left to install in 98 SE before swapping files.
I think there will be software differences stix. The DLL files and EXE files are reprogrammed and recompiled. The have refined algorithms. When 98 calls the DLL file it will get the added benefits of the new algorithms. An example, I installed 98 SE just for this experiment. After the changes I installed my software (you can imagine the fragmentation after Windows Update and installing software) and defragged 3 GB of info. It took about 30 Min. to do the entire thing. 98 had always taken so much longer to this before.

W95 on my box has ALOT of W98 apps, dlls and drivers. Installing IE5.x & DUN 1.3 on W95 does this to some extent.
W98's IDE driver esd_506.pdr (ver 4.222) probably gives the biggest boost. Ditto for W98's Matrox vid drivers & WinME's scandisk & defrag..

what's the point?
after you install IE6SP1 it'll be the same
specially if you installed all the WindowsUpdates
i much rather nuke everything and have the 95/98 hybrid running Phoenix, now that's speed

Win ME's defrag does run at twice the speed of the one in 95/98.
Rename your existing defrag.exe to defrag.old & copy the ME one into your 98 windows directory.

actually it does, believe it or not :D
that's part of the reason why when you kill IE on 98 your Win Explorer goes back to like the one on 95 :p
