Click to See Complete Forum and Search --> : can you increase the FSB on an XP 2400?

I was thinking of saving money and time by getting an Athlon XP 2400 and upping it to 2700 speed and also upping the fsb to 333 like the 2700. Is it possible? and if so, how do I go about doing it?

The XP2400+ is multiplier locked at 15.0 (15.0 x 133mHz = 2000mHz). It is supposed to be pretty easy to unlock.

The XP2700+ runs at 2.17gHz (13.0 x 166mHz).

Besides the ability of the CPU itself to run at XP2700+ speeds, basically, you are asking if you can get the fsb up to 144mHz (15.0 x 144 = 2.167gHz). Depends on your motherboard, DDR ram and the other hardware involved. At 144mHz fsb, your PCI bus devices will be running at 36.1mHz (33.3mHz is default), and your AGP card will be running at 72.2mHz (66.67mHz is default). Just use good RAM (e.g., Corsair XMS3200DDR C2 is what I use).

These seem to be pretty reachable targets. I run 24/7 at 178mHz (KT333 mobo) which yields 35.6mHz @ PCI, 71.2mHz @ AGP. Others have gone much higher.

Good luck!
Please report back on your progress.

actually, I'm wondering if I can up the fsb to 166 x 2 = 332 (333) to match the corsair xms pc 2700 ddr ram (333) that I have. Also, they've shown in benchmarks that the faster fsb makes a significant improvement in performance.

I know I can unlock the xp 2400, but not sure how. I'll go to an overclocker's website to figure it out.

I just ordered the components for my next comp today. I already have many components from my existing computer I'm using in my new one, so I saved some money. Included in the components I just bought was the brand new Epox 8K9A2+ with 8 x agp and up to 3gb of DDR ram. Here is my new comp

Epox 8K9A2+ VIA KT400
Chieftec Workstation Tower case (black) with 420 w p/s and acrylic side window
AMD XP 2400 retail with heatsink and fan
512 MB Corsair XMS PC2700 DDR ram with platinum-silver heatspreaders
Logitech optical mouse (black)
Plextor CDRW-DVD combo (black)
3Com network card
my existing Geforce 4 ti 4400
my existing keyboard
my existing monitor
my existing floppy drive

All of this came to $878 with shipping

Not to shabby if I do say so myself :)

I'm running an unlocked XP2100+ on the 8K3A+ at 166+/166+ (usually run at 178mHz fsb/mem), using the XMS 3200DDR C2 RAM I mentioned above (whenever I got much above 172 bus speed, my XMS DDR2700 C2 just didn't like it unless I pushed vdimm to 2.90). Although I haven't pushed things very much, I have run at 178 with vdimm at 2.80 with no problems (Corsair just seems to like that wee bit extra voltage, even at default bus speed).

Unless you unlock your CPU, pushing that XP2400+ to 15.0 x 166 is a real stretch... that'd be 2490mHz... one heck of an overclock!

You are probably talking vcores well over 1.90, so cooling the cpu will probably be the limiting factor. I think your EPoX will go to 2.05... maybe higher. That retail HS/fan will not do the job for you... you are talking top-of-line air cooling or even water cooling for what you want to do.

Trouble is, once you get it to run at 166, then you're going to want to see what the other components will tolerate as you inch up to 180fsb and higher... so, unlocking comes next :p

CPU Mods (http://www.cpumods.com) does professional unlocking for $30... machine-welding microwire to bridge gaps, and laser cutting to cut bridges where needed, then they seal the work areas in clear enamel... test cpu before and after, guarentee results or return the cpu undamaged... I used them for my XP2100+ since that particuklar cpu is a pain to unlock. You may want to check them out.

Have fun, looks like it will be great set up!

You're right that the fsb plays a large role in speed, but . .

as jmichna probably said,

fsb x multiplier = speed

Although the 2400 overclocks well, i don't think it could handle 25% overclock of going from 133 fsb to 166 fsb without really good cooling.

Which is why you need to unlock the multiplier and lower it.

I think most kt400 boards will unlock the processor for you. ( i know the epox does this) If not, all you need to do is connect a bridge with a pencil. (yes, pencil trick works on tbreds) There's plenty of good guides for this. Make sure not to get the thunderbird guide by mistake.

Doesn't Soyo have a BIOS update for your mobo to allow for the XP2400+'s?

Running @ 166 fsb would eliminate the need for more than a 14x multiplier.

166 x 14 = 2324 mhz :)

Um, no I'm not. Don't put thoughts into my head please. I mainly want to just get the fsb on the 2400 up to 333 and the mem bus on the mobo up to 333 as well.

Ummm, no I won't, because basically what I want is to get it running synchronously. I'm not one of these frothing at the mouth overclockers that just have to squeeze every last bit of speed out of their computers, at the risk of frying my cpu or mobo. And secondly, I've never overclocked a computer before, so there's no "fix" to get. And thirdly, I don't have a lot of money atm, so I'm not going to risk frying something and voiding my warranty by trying to oc it.

Also, I am not "they"; I am me. So Don't tell me what I want and what I am thinking mmkay?

If I wanted all that speed, I would have waited til the 2700 xp and the Nforce 2 was out and just leave them at default. The reason I couldn't wait is because a couple of games were coming out that require higher than my ancient pIII 550 can handle, and there's no store close to where I live so I have to order online, therefore a bit of waiting time.

'nuff said.

It's just that your first comment in this thread indicates you do want to overclock... you later said "...basically what I want is to get it running synchronously" which, at 333mHz, is overclocking the cpu, since it is multiplier locked

mmm... okay... I would never tell YOU what you want, and I certainly cannot tell you what you are thinking... mmkay ;)

Peace, and good luck with whatever it is you are trying to do.
