My parents' Dell comes with a free year of MSN internet access, so it might make sense to cancel their current ISP, but I'm a little doubtful about MSN where usenet is concerned -- at the very least I'd think it wouldn't support binaries, even if it did provide general access to usenet. Because, AOL, for one, is kind of sketchy with usenet, from what I know... Does anyone have any experience with MSN?
Thanks a lot,
W Chang

Thanks, it does seem that many Usenet servers are somewhat inconsistent. That Dell with the free MSN access, it should be arriving soon so I'll be able to check things out before doing anything to the current ISP.
I'm trying out Easynews right now, from a suggestion I saw on Usenet -- they offer a 3-day free trial (www.easynews.com) It looks good so far, at $10 a month for just the Usenet, with web access to the binaries (you can download using Gozilla, Getright, etc, bypassing the uuencoding overhead that makes all the files 1.4x bigger, good for dialup connections).
Anyhow, thanks again for your help,
W Chang

Hold on to your current ISP until you've had a couple months to give MSN a good workout. Don't know about your area but in mine, MSN is an abismal dial up. Very unreliable connections or none at all.

I currently use MSN for my wide area business ISP. It does offer an Usenet server with multitudes of thousands of groups. About binaries, it is mixed result. Some groups are flooded, while others seem seem to offer basically nothing. Perhaps you should try the MSN service before opting out of your current ISP. Becuase of this, I tend to use my personal ISP for Usenet, as it offers a full access/unmoderatated/unfiltered Usenet server.

Yeah, that does sound like a good idea -- I hadn't actually questioned the reliability of the dialup itself. And sometimes we're doing kind of mission critical stuff, don't need to worry about the ISP.
Thanks for the help...

YES....
Definitely Agree with that MSN is a huge hunk of **** for an
ISP!!!
I have a subsciption to Supernews and they seem to be OK a little slow though.
RoadRunner is the best.
