I have a P3 533 in Asus P3V4x and plan to get a used P3 with higher speed. Can it handle more than 1Gz? I flushed the bios to 1005 Beta 001 (is this the latest?), although I just tinker with the Asus BIOS update in windows and was surprised I updated it without me knowing. I know it only when I restart the PC with that BIOS version. Anyways, can I put in a 1Gz p3?

According to that, it handles up to the P3 Coppermine EB series (133MHz). Those go up to 1100MHz. As long as it's not a Tualatin P3, it should work.

Wow, that response was so fast I just turned my head and its there. Thanks BB. BTW, if I put in a coppermine EB and overclock it beyond 1100, will it still be supported?
And my BIOS, is it the latest? If so, then it's a painless update unlike what I read from many threads.

Yes it's painless unless you have PC100 memory and upgrade to a 133MHz P3. OCing is not supported, silly! A 100MHz CPU will OC better than a 133MHz one, naturally.

OCing is not supported
What do you mean? The installed P3 533 is oclock to 600 running at 150 mhz (though RAM fsb was reduced to 113mhz), and I was surprised it is pretty stable. Torture tested it and it passed. So if I put in a P3 900Cu EB and oclock it to 9x150=1350mhz (don;t know if there is P3 900 100mhz), it will not run? Then I have to go a bit lower by getting P3 700?:x

I have a P3 coppermine 1ghz 133bus running at 1.13ghz at 151bus. only thing stopping me from overclocking more is my 45g hard drive. It corrupts itself but my 60g is fine... so ohwell. It runs smooth at 1.2ghz (160bus) with the 45g out of there..:t

Hey... hey... did you said 160 bus speed? Why can't I see it in the BIOS? Or I have a different p3V4x version?:x

What do mean, "supported"? No one is going to support OCing. That's what I meant.

OCing all depends on what your FSB choices are in BIOS. Look in there. Do they go over 133MHz? If not and your CPU is the 133Mhz variety, you're stuck. If the CPU is the 100MHz type, you should have some stepping available for it.

Sorry, but I mean if the frequency AFTER overclocking, say, 1.3+ ghz can still be handled by the mobo, and not ASUS to support oclocking.

As long as the multiplier is supported and you have some FSB stepping over the native frequency of the CPU, you can overclock. I wouldn't expect too much from a 1GHz P3 - maybe a 10-15% OC.
