I have a Asus p3b-f with a celeron 400.

Almost everytime I starup, I get either nothing (black screen) and then after restarting, I get the bios screen stating "started in safe mode... due to improper cpu speed setting"...

All the setting that show up look correct... so I exit and save and the computer starts up normally. Works great until I shut down and then power-up again... same abnormal cycle continues...

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance...
Matt

Welcome to SysOpt!

Asus motherboards sometimes don't like the memory you give them. I had this very problem recently with PC100 RAM in a TUSL2-C. When I switched to PC133, it was fixed.

Update your BIOS, clear CMOS and set the motherboard to "jumper mode" (set the dip switches to default). Rearrange and/or check your memory chips.

Which BIOS revision? Have you verified the CPU using a utillity (is it possible it's a slower 66MHz FSB version being OC'd to 100MHz FSB?).

I will look into the memory suggestions... that could very well be it... since I have somewhat recently installed new RAM.

Also, what utility do you suggest to check the settings of the CPU? I'd like to do that also.. since that idea crossed my mind also.

Thanks
Matt
