Don't know myself.:(

I think there are a couple of members here that run linux.

There may even be differences in performance between flavors. What are there, about 12 versions?

You'll have to follow up with your own findings.

Yes I forgot about the various flavors, dumb question. I'm running red hat 8 so if I don't lose it & finger out how to run seti on it i'll let you know. I still don't have the boot loader configured as well as I wanted & i'm using that sorry cyrix cpu in the remnants of an emachine. So many chances for failure. I ordered a celeryon cpu so hopefully it will perform better.:)

This is a good opportunity to find out. I have about 10-20 old PII-266 & PII-300's sitting in storage that are going to be wiped anyway. I had planned on using them for setting up a proxy server w/ Redhat or Mandrake. I guess I could set up several different flavors of Linux & *nix (freebsd & netbsd,) etc to see what, if any, differences there are on speed. We just got another switch so I've got more ports on the network to use now too. Now if I just had a whole lot of time to play instead to having to work while I'm at work. :p

Forge ahead, don't wait on me. What I know about linux could fit in a thimble. I suspect if you know what your doing linux might be faster but I bet the cpu will only do so much number crunching regardless of the os. I'm just trying to start a rumor about linux being faster so i won't be the only one. Misery enjoys company!

Hi guys. I've been crunching seti on my Linux box for several months. Take a look at this thread (http://www.sysopt.com/forum/showthread.php?threadid=114418&highlight=linux) for the details and a quick Linux primer. There shouldn't be too much difference in installation between the different flavors of *nix, but as smithdw said, it could be interesting to check which version crunches quicker. (My guess is that they're all about the same, and just a little quicker than Windows.)

For raw processing like Seti I don't know if the OS will make too much of a difference.

When it comes to gaming Xenomorph had an interesting comparison between linux and M$ here (http://www.sysopt.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=121570)

Have we come to a conclusion yet?

Too many other irons in the fire so to speak. I've allready got seti running on a few computers so I'm still just trying to figure out redhat. Not enough spare time. :D Sorry. I'll try & get back to it soon. :t

Interesting if wordy article. It looks like NT is faster than Linux which is faster than 9x.

If NT is 100%, Linux runs at 92.2%, and 9x runs at 85.2% of the NT full speed.

It's a small test group but consistant scores across all systems, even counting in variances.
