Recently, I went to scan a file for viri with McAfee Virus Scan 5.0 and fairly new dat files. It almost began to scan but then a window popped up that said I need to "update my software". I have to click a button that says "Purchase" that is supposed to take me online. I think it is confused. There is nothing that I want to update and I DID buy it already! Also, when I click the link, an error message comes up that says I don't have SuchAndSuch file. After that, another message comes up that says my license has expired. What license??Whas up with that???
I uninstalled/reinstalled it, but to no avail.
I cannot scan any file by right clicking on it and clicking on "Scan for Viruses", but I can go in Virus Scan Central and scan folders from there.
Someone please help! I feel naked without my viri protection!

Just get a free virus checker. They are not any worse than the pay ones, IMO, and come with plenty of update lovin. Innoculate IT is the best and I have also/do use AVG.

Wart,
Sounds like your time frame for "free" updates has expired. Many "retail" versions of virus software come with only a set amount of free updates http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif
I would suggest getting one of the freebies too

What?!!!!! That's insane! Forget them.
I have a copy of 4.0 that came with my '99 Dell comp - UNLIMITED updates. I'll just use that or that free checker.
Ha! Trying to screw me outta money...that's bs.
Freaking pathetic. Now that I think of it, I think I'll use the free one.
I am quite disappointed that this was a waste of $30 http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif

It's just not worth paying anything at all. I already paid for it so I should get unlimited updates, IMO.

McAfee used to provide weekly virus updates, and occasional engine updates as long as it stayed within the numbering scheme 3.x, 4.x, etc. I have McAfee on one PC and NAV (about to expire after 3 months; will be replaced by InoculateIT) on my new PC. I think Nav gets $4.95 a year for updates, but I'm not sure what that includes. Moot point anyway. I'm not gonna renew anyway.

Go with Inoculate. I had Norton Antivirus 2000 and it only provides 1year of free updates.
These companies are trying to keep revenue streams going. They figure you buy the product from them and then they get money from you every year, then they no longer support the original product so then you have to upgrade. This way they keep getting paid.
That's good for Corporate because they need the protection and support. But for personal use just go with Inoculate IT personal edition. I had Norton Internet Security 2000 which I just sold on ebay.
It was better to go with the free ZoneAlarm and Inoculate. Both better products too.

Inoculate sells their software to corporations and gives it to individuals for free.
We currently use it here at my work. They make much more money doing support and selling 100 or thousands of licenses to corporations rather than 1 user. Obviously the corporations are fronting the cost for them to supply it free to the masses.
I think ZoneAlarm works the same way.
