i was just thinking about this... would it be possible to use fiber optic instead of IDE cables? it would be much faster....wonder why no ones come out with anything like this.

I believe fiber optic is fairly brittle to mess with. I do know one of the engineers that first introduced the first machine that was used to splice fiber optic cable and wired the perimeter of the new york area, although another friend has learned to use a newer machine that makes the process a little bit simpler than as tedious as the first machine.

Why, is this going to lead to an xfile case or something.:D

although its pretty brittle and cant do corners, it isnt much distance from a hard drive to the motherboard.

fibre can't do corners? fibre can do corners just fine. thats where the optical cable comes into play. if fibre couldn't do corners, SONET wouldn't exist. ya think optical networks are all line-of-sight?

as far as with current computers, just remember that there needs to be an optical/electrical converter on both ends of the line/bus in order for it to work with electrically-based data systems such as what we currently have. a converter or extra circuit of any kind increases overhead.

now, if purley optical systems were to be deployed............

wait my networking book even says that its hard to use, because the cable cant do corners.

maybe it's the definition of "corner". i thought you meant any bend or loop at all. right angles or very sharp turns can be a problem, however, so therin lies the problem.

i meant corners, i know it can do loops. why does it take them so long to come out with new technology..

Man you got some Real Old book there :p

Fiber can do corner

what the books TRIES to say is that it CAN NOT do 90 degrre corners, but anything less than 75 degree corner is good, even 85 degree

is just that the more you corner the more data loss there would be if anything more than 50 to 60 degree

i wouldn't try to bend it over 65 degree, but technically it'll do just fine up to 80 degree, 85 is the absolute limite, cuz at 90

it cuts

just use the same physics you use to drive your car in the corners

you can do real hard conerings, but NO CAR can do 90 degree corners :D:x

Actually there looking at or trying to implement a serial ata connector for hdd's to make data move faster plus the ribbon smaller to get better ventilation inside the case, fiber optic isn't feasible yet otherwise they would have used it.

Serial ATA is cheaper and better for ventilation alrite, from factory point of view

but Fiber Optics is still the best conductor, is just that it requires too much work, so people don't wanna do it cuz it cost too much and they are affraid people will not buy them

as for me

i rather have them improve on the Wireless

that will even make better use than Fiber Optic for inside the Case

no wires

coool.... :D (literally)

Business is afraid of wireless, one supermarket was using wireless but fear set in and they went back to hardwire, optics would be expensive as mentioned, who wants to spend 30 to 100 for ribbon cable.

For communications though its great believe this country is wired 3 to 5 times what it needs to get the net and everything else moving.
