Running Win98SE. After clicking <Start> <Shut Down> <Shut Down> my cursor turns into an hourglass; but, after 2-3 seconds simply returns to a regular cursor with the system continuing to run. When I excute the <Start> <Shut Down> etc...procedure again, the cursor turns into and hourglass, the desktop disappears and the system shuts down.

What's up? This has been happening on an ever increasing basis for the past 30-45 days.

Run System File Checker. This happened to me when I had a corrupted explorer.exe and another corrupted system file. SFC cleared it up.

Also, what processes do you have running when you shut down. Do you get a prompt to "end task or wait"?

wyvrn is on the right track. That also happens when there is another ongoing process that needs to be shut down first. For instance, I use SubDesktop, which is a program that puts all the icons in a separate window that can be moved around the desktop. If I don't shut it down first, I have to hit Start=>Shutdown twice. Check to see what's running before you hit Shutdown the first time and then again after. Whatever program is missing is the culprit.

Wyvrn & M_Six........SysOpt is just f_cking great!

While I haven't got a clue what System File Checker is or where to get it, as usual SysOpt has pointed me in the right direction. I'd still be fooling around with this next year.

Thanks for the timely heads-up!

System File Checker restores Win98 system files that may get corrupted or written over by other programs. Easiest way to run it is to go to Start | Run and type in "SFC" (without quotes). You can replace a specific file or scan for any altered files.

A very nice utility.

W98SE has a known shutdown problem.

>Start >Run msconfig.exe >General(tab) >Advanced >Check "Disable Fast Shutdown".

That should help.
