Been reading about a magnetic tip drive fan from YS Tech that supposedly put out more air then 5000+ RPM loud fans and only at under 30db. I think i read soemwhere 90+ cfm.

Has anyone tried this fan or heard anything else about them? I'd like to know if they are worth buying.

Arent magnets supposed to be bad around electrical equipment?

Thanks

Well, you really cant get away without magnets in computers, as HDDs, FDDs, CDROMs, and all fans have magnets in them.

Anything with an electric motor has magnets, so it cant be avoided.

... a basic heatsink fan was included, but ... a problem with the YS Tech TMD fans and use one on ... have been reports of "problems" ranging from shorting out screws on the fan case to spinning out ...

The website that report this is down, sorry do a search for more info. :)

My recollection from a couple articles is the recall was prompted by issues with fan spin-up, and fan turning at over-spec speeds. Don't recall seeing anything regarding shorting out screws and fan blades spinning out. Do you remember where you heard these things? :(

EDIT: the more I'm trying to recall details of the recall -- I'm very interested in trying this fan design -- it seems one issue was how the mobo's reported to speed this fan was turning at... I think speed tended to reported too high... also, there would be issues with how those variable-speed controls tied to temperature would regulate the fan speed because of issues with proper speed detection

TMD design still seems to offer definite design advantages, and I hope YS Tech works out the bugs. They would definitely have an advantage -- esp. aiflow versus noise produced -- over their competitors provided this design is patentable/protected. ;)

Following are some links that may interest folks interested in TMD fans. It's from the YS Tech website, so take info cum grano salis.

If anyone is interested... at least one N Amer company still seems to be offering the TMD...

Galaxy-tech.net (http://www.galaxy-tech.net/YSTECH%20FAN.htm)

I don't know anything about this company.

I wish somewhere it'd say if the problems where straghtened out. I did some reading before on them but most was previews before tehy were even released. Havent seen too much written about them recently.

I can't recall what site I read that info. on. I came across it looking for something else. What I do is keep tech notes on things that I might use in the future(copy/paste part of article for reference) I saw the YS Tech fan and had read fair reviews, so when I came across the recall bit, I just copied what I posted earlier for follow-up research, like you are doing :)

The noise/cfm on those TMD's at Galaxy-tech doesn't seem that impressive.

The lower RPM one does AIRFLOW: 30CFM, NOISE: 33dBA. The high RPM fan does 36cfm/38dba.

The Enermax adjustable 80mm fans (http://www.directron.com/uc8fab.html) I'm using right now run at Airflow: 25 CFM to 40 CFM. Noise: 21dB(a) to 33dB(a). And I didn't search too long and hard for low-noise high-flow fans either.

Been reading more and it seems as though only size now is 70mm size so no good. They will come out with 60mm and 80mm later.

I'm sure if they ever work correctly the 80mm size will be quieter and have more airflow.

I'm almost positive I saw higher CFM numbers on a website unless they where misquoted. The 38dba aint bad for spinning at 5700RPM though, most of those high RPM delta fans are what 50+dba?

Magnetic technology is cool. Don't know if I have time to wait for them to work out the issues though.

your cfm numbers are a little high

Yes, they're good, and yes, some of them don't work right.

If you short them out, they won't work. (easy to do because their housing is aluminum) If you get unlucky and get a bad one, it won't work.

They're good because they're quiet for the airflow they have, and they look cool. :)
