Hi to all.

I'm helping a friend who wants to connect a Compaq Presario notebook (WinXP) with a Pentium 4 (Win98), through a parallel cable.

I have done this many times before but always with win98-win98 or dos-win98.
Now, I can not make WinXP to cooperate! The cable is checked and it works (with 2 other computer -win98/win98)

More specificly: I start the 2 comps, and I run Direct Cable connection (on Win98), configured to "listen" (Host). Ok. But in WinXP there is no Direct Cable Connection utility, so i go through Add Network place Wizard, select Direct Cable connection, and configure this computer to try to connect to the Pentium (W98), but it cannot! WinXP pops a windows saying "Veryfing name & password" (I use no name nor password on both comps) and never makes it to connect, and the Pentium remains with the window that says "Waiting for a computer to connect. Is the guest computer running OK?" (or something like that).

a) Both LPT ports are ECP (device manager)
b) I tried to use username & password (of course the same on the 2 comps) but the things remained exactly the same.
c) I tried to swift the roles (WinXP=listen, Win98=Guest), but the things remained exactly the same, again.

Is there something I must change in WinXP in order to work?

Please Help!

it'll not work with guest mode

you cannot use blank password/user name

you must use a user name and password that is set on both computer
