Okay,Im new here LOL
But I just viwed a video on the MSWinXp website of a side by side comparision of Win 95 and Win XP.
I've read up some on XP and would like to upgrade to it.
Microsoft says the minimal reqs for it are a machine with a 233-mhz CPU,probably 300 would be best, but my machine is an AMD K-6 233,benchmarked and clocked at 280 mhz with 128mb RAM on board. FRom what they say,Im ready and eligable for upgrade.
What I'd like to know is...
A)Do I have to upgrade the CPU or not?
B)How cheaply can go about this?
C)Are there websites to go to for more info, like this one?

In Waco,Texas
Michael

I would say no - even 2k struggle on my backup P2 450

My advice is to be running a 500MHz CPU and 256mb of RAM for XP .. but thats just IMO

Your system will also probably require a BIOS upgrade to run XP, and your system's motherboard manufacturer might not provide an update.

As the last poster said, you need a 500MHz K6-2 CPU, most of which will overclock comfortably to 550MHz. Your current motherboard might already be able to run one, so download its manual from the motherboard manufacturer's site, or ask at the mothetboard's newsgroup. Search for "mainboard".

But if you can get a BIOS update that you know is XP compliant, you should be able to buy a motherboard/processor/RAM bundle from an auction site such as eBay.com for around £100/$150 or less. Just make sure that you check the seller's feedback.

Depending on the use you make of the computer, you might even be able to find such a bundle in which the motherboard has onboard video and sound. This is fine for running office applications, utilities, movies, and accessing the web, but not sufficient for playing games.

XP ran fine on my K6-2-500 no oc, until the seagate 20gb drive packed in. Boy am I miffed at that, thats two seagates dead on me and this one only eighteen months old.

Don't think your 233 will hack it. BTW Duron 900mhz are being sold for a pitance, like 26 uk pounds or 39 us dollars or cheaper. That's what you really want if forced to upgrade, new mobo, duron, and memory PC133, although durons only run at 100mhz, so i suppose pc 100 is ok there.

OR buy second hand, I was offered a PII-450, mobo and memory for £15 pounds, thats $23 and I refused, i can't use it for my stuff.

I agree with jakk.:D

Or you could always upgrade to 98SE?:t

Yeah - win 98 is probably the best overall system for that rig im afriad, given its low power :(

Thanks guyz for all your advice to my question !
My dino is all ready running Win 98 SE LOL
BUt I might re-vamp on Pentium MMX 233 PC into an XP machine
by just refitting the mbo/memory/HD.
Or just get a slightly used P2-450,etc.
Once again,thanks
