Click to See Complete Forum and Search --> : Number of colors (of icons) in System Tray in Win2K

Before I had always WinME (and of course the other Win9x's) installed.
In WinME icons in the system tray are displayed in more than 256 colors.
In Win2K it seems this isn't so.
Why?
Can I change this?
Currently I'm running WinAmp and there is a really ugly icon in the system tray.
Under WinME I see this icon in all the right colors.

Right click on your desktop to open display properties and clik the Effects tab. Check the box that says, "Show icons using all possible colors".

Yeah? And?
NOTHING!
I still have an ugly (seemingly 8 color) icon sitting next to the clock!

Go back to Display Properties and click the Settings tab and see what colors you are using. Also check what display driver your computer is using. W2k may have reverted to some generic driver, especially if your video card has compatibility problems with W2k. If so, check the card manufacturer's site for an update.

I'm using True Color 32Bit on an ATI Technologies Inc. 3D Rage LT Pro AGP2x (and that is exactly what I have)....

....and it still doesn't work!

DO YOU HAVE ALL COLORS IN THE SYSTRAY?

I too am running Win2K and have just tested your problem, and I get the same results! The system tray icon is only showing a low amount of colours...not that I'm too bothered by it!

I'm using 32 True in W2k also and I can not discern any difference between the icons on my desktop and in my system tray, other than the reduced size. The only other possibility I can think of is that there is variations in the original icons. Do all the icons have the same color deficiency? Otherwise, I'm stumped.

I defintely only have 16? colors in the System Tray!
If you run WinAmp you can configure it so there is an icon in the System Tray.
And it's icon has less colors than in the Quick-Launch-Bar!

@wharez: But in WinME it shows all colors! Do you think there is a way to enable it?

You can change the system tray icon from that "ugly 8 color" icon to the full 32-bit icon.

let me know if that's it

That Winamp icon in your system tray means that you have the Winamp agent running all of the time from startup.

I think what marc666 was trying to say is that you really don't need that Icon in the system tray, that's all. It's another app running in the background using system resources, most people like to limit the number of apps that are always running on their systems.

Well, I don't have Win2K, but it what u described happens in Win98SE also. I guess there is no way to have 32-bit color in your system tray for Win98SE or Win2K. WinME possibly updated that little feature of having 32-bit color in the system tray.

Now, at least on my machine, the ONLY way I get a system tray icon for Winamp is if "Enable Winamp agent" is checked, and Winamp agent runs ALL THE TIME. If "show system tray icon" is checked, and Winamp Agent isn't, there is NO icon in the system tray. By the way, I have version 2.72.

Seems like you don't know much about WinAmp (and computers), Jadison.
Preferences =&gt; Display =&gt; Show WinAmp in: =&gt; SystemTray Only!

BTW THAT wasn't my QUESTION! I wanted to know how to enable more than 8 colors!

Ok I stand corrected, there is a way to just have the tray icon on without the agent.

Hey Variable, do you get a menu like this with a slide bar?

<IMG SRC="http://www.zbzoom.net/~mjgordon/winamp.jpg" border=0>

If so, you can slide the bar to your desired icon type and color.

Yeah and now compare the icon above the slide with what you get in the System Tray!
It is the same but the one in the Tray is shown with only 8 colors!

And in WinME is is shown in ALL COLORS! Just like there!

Ok I don't have that problem, but I am running Win98SE.

It looks like you never even looked at your Systray because Win98SE misses this feature as well as Win2K and Win95!

Did a re-install of Win2K and the issue is still unresolved!

It seems Win2K just doesn't support this feature (WinME is the only Windows OS that does) and that NOBODY found a way to enable or add this.

And everybody is just stumped about it ;-)

Well Vari....I would suggest that you settle down a touch. No one was out of line in this thread except for you. Since your conviced that WinME is the only way to get full color in the sys tray I will now close this thread to prevent futher out bursts.

Variable

Sure you do because it seems WinME is the only Win that displays icons in the systray using ALL colors!
