I am going to start a new website, one that my girlfriend and i will moderate....we wwant to make it a pretty standard deal, news, forums, files, maybe a chatroom, for stuff we are interested in. I have an exra puter and im god at hardware...so here the problem: I know bunk about html, webhosting, domains, ftp, yadda yadda...and i have no money to spare for it.... Are there good places to get freeware that will help a moron like me make a good website...and any way to get it online without spending any money?
A simple question comes to mind: Why?

Who cares why.. cause it's fun and something to do.. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
Go to
Http:\\communities.msn.com
They make you sign up for a 'passport' BIG DEAL
There you can make as many websites as you want for free, upload pics, put links for free. I think I have 5 websites there right now, I just can't remember my password half the time, if it's my married name, my maiden, my son's name????
Then go to
http:\\communities.msn.com/DesignsOnYou/home.htm

You said you have a spare computer so I'm assuming you want to host the site yourself. Unless you already have a fast internet connection you are going to have to spend some money, and also registering the domain name. Go to www.dslwebserver.com (http://www.dslwebserver.com) , it will take you step by step on how to host your own site.

Someone looking for the Fire Brigade?

To answer the thread, the likes of www.ezboard.com (http://www.ezboard.com) is another option. I don't think there is any html programming involved, and its free. A few of the guys here have sites on it. Voogru, NDC?
Also another free one that I've used is homestead. Check out the link to my thread. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/Forum1/HTML/011994.html
All the best, Justy.

I do a little (very basic) HTML. I never went very far with it cuz all I wanted to do was produce a small family type site. This was easier than I could have ever imagined...and I am one of the hard headest ppl you will ever hope to see.
I'll be back later to day with some links for you...gotta go find them again, been a couple of years now.
Anyway, I Very strongly suggest getting an HTML editor. There are many many ways to create HTML ready for you to simply type in what you want, and it is formatted into HTML for you. This is good for somebody that dosn't want to learn...but, with the editor..you can design, edit, do just about everything your heart desires. And one of the benefits is, you can view-edit on your own machine, and get it just right the first time befor ftp'ing out to your space.
One thing I do is, when I see a site doing some java script (and I don't know doodly about writing java code) on a web site that I like, I simply copy the code to word pad in a text format, then put it into my editor, edit it to what I want, add or delete whatever...save it to html format...ftp it out to my site..and there it is...Can't do that with these auto html generators. I have a couple of freebie html editors...not sure they are free anymore...was shareware a couple of years ago. I'll look and see what I can find for you...
Later...

RataToo, if you've got MS Office, you already have a basic Web Building piece of software, MS Word! Click on "New" and and select Web page, no HTML involved. Once you get a start on the page, look at the HTML code, it gets easy to understand and follow once you see what it does! As far as hosting, it doesn't cost anything! Use Virtual Avenue, many of us here do! http:www.virtualave.net
The only problem with free hosts, they add a banner to your page or a pop-up, so what, 25Meg for free! Who cares!
After a while when the big bucks start rolling in from your free hosted site, buy a domain name, use a real "paid for" host or host it yourself with the OC3 line you can now afford http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif Start out small with no cost and when you're ready, spend the $ http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

I've recently discovered a great site that alows you to set up your own chatroom, postcards, bulletin boards etc etc - Try www.bravenet.com (http://www.bravenet.com) You can get all sorts of free stuff, and if you ever do have any money you can then pay $99 to get the advertising removed!
