I have a mobo that has 2 ata-66, and 2 ata-100's, my HD is currently hooked up to the ata-66. Im not sure what speed my HD is actually rated for, if i just plug it into the ata-100 (using ata-100 cables) will it work even if it is only an ata-66 HD??? Or is there a way to tell what it is without acutally trying it?

i actually tried hooking up the HD to the ata-100 channels with ata100 cable, wouldn't even boot up, wasn't detecting it was even there. My mobo is gigabyte GA-7ZXR if that helps.

I assume your mobo has an on-board RAID controller and that is what you mean when you say ATA-100. My guess is you have to configure the RAID controller and the standard BIOS to allow you to boot from the RAID ports. RTFM.

What are the part# /model# of the hard drives? It is very easy to check the manufactures website to see what spec the drives are. Also as Daverme suggested is to check the boot order of the drives in the bios as usually the ATA100 (IDE and 4) are seen by the system as a SCSI interface and thus if you left the boot order a A, C, CDROM of course you wont boot http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif change it to something like A, SCSI, CDrom ect

I wouldn't have a clue even what brand HD i got hehe i couldn't be bothered building this computer myself, and at the time i was in too much of a hurry to go into specifics with my computer shop. I asked them they said they couldn't remember, but thought it was only ata-66, but in sandra2001 it scores a fair bit higher than the ata-66 comparison, which is why i thought it may be capable of higher still.
My mobo has an on-board promise raid controller. It also lets you choose to enable/disable it, it also lets you choose whether you want ide 3 and ide 4 to act as RAID ports or ATA-100 ports. I tried with raid enable, and disabled, i didn't try changing from it being "ata-100 port" to "raid port", perhaps i will give that i try next time i am bored.
Mntsnow, thanx for the boot order tip, perhaps that could be the problem. Maybe today after work i will pull this thing apart, try the things mensioned, then maybe even pull the HD out to get a look at brand etc....
Thans for the help guys
