For anyone interested here's something I found out after several hours of troubleshooting:
If you have a Via chipset and experience trouble getting Windows to recognize a DVD-ROM or a CD-RW drive, try uninstalling the Via Atapi driver and instead install the Microsoft IDE drivers from your Windows CD.
In particular, enter Device Manager, update the drivers for IDE 1 and 2 and update the bus mastering drivers as well by forcing the use of the bus mastering drivers from the Windows CD and not those Windows tries to force you to use.
Apparently some CD-RW or DVD drives have problems with the Via IDE drivers (as I found out) in the Via 1in4 driver sets.
Now I can see my Plextor CD-RW again and I even can now set DMA, and have it stay set, for my DVD drive which I couldn't do before.
I guess I'll have to apologize to Creative tech support for the long message I sent them about why I couldn't get DMA to work with their DVD drive...ooops! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
