Just wondering what the best buy is out there for the Microsoft OS? (These would be to resell with a new computer. )
Any ideas? Would probably want to offer 98SE and XP. Any suggestions?

Newegg (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.asp?submit=manufactory&catalog=90&manufactory=1149&DEPA=1&sortby=14&order=1)
XP Home OEM $90
XP Pro OEM $139
98SE $91
XP Home is the better deal for most home users. Nice. Stable. And it costs $1 less than 98 which is 3 years old. XP Home is almost the same as XP Pro. They just left a few features out of XP Home that most home users won't miss and probably have never heard of.

ms craps are the only things that don't go down in time as any other it products
sigh, don't you hate that?
On a personal note i run a AMD 1.9XP, 80gb HD, 512MB ram, Geforce 4, 17"AOC Monitor Dvd & 40sp rewriter, and use Windows M.E.. I find Windows Xp uses more of your system resources slows the Pc down dramaticly!..XP Home Ed. is really BAD!, same for XP Pro.. even worse but few more extras that are useless!!!..so if it were me passing this system on use Win M.E. very stable O/S no hassles from me anyway!:D :p

I have found Windows ME to be the most problematic OS in history. It's almost hard to beleve how many people have reproted problems with it. I found people who bought new computers with ME, only to not have it work right. switch OS, works great!!
In fact, the motherboard I'm useing right now was given to me by someone who had problems with it. It was so bad he GAVE me the Athlon MB and Processor! He was running ME. I figured it wasn't the motherboard, but ME so I built a new computer. I have used 98 on it with no problems at all. Thank to ME's problems, I got a upgraded computer!!!!!!

no matter what, winME sucks.
XP Pro is good. I like it and ony chrashed three times on me. And Win2K Advanced server has never crashed on me.
but like AG says.
Linux is free :D
Personal Comparison!
My system.. P3 650 w/win98 se
My Bro's 1.4 Dell w/win ME
Mine was faster and more stable than his so called Dell. I refuse to even own a copy of ME.
I have since gone to XP Pro! Even with my rant on how XP blew only because of the Regisration Process! Other than that I think XP is DaChit! ( for an M$ product ).
When I get a new Comp. My old 650 is going full blown Linux
Cause It's FREE!! :D

strange--
ive had WinME on my gateway PIII/933 for almost 2 years with no problems , yet!!
This comput does not get much use--used for abt 1 hr weekly for web browsing..thats about it.
Its twin Gateway has Win 98se and it has chronic shutdown problems.

WinME sucked and still sucks...I'd go with Windows 2000 Professional...very stable and reliable.
If you choose Linux, which is free...you'll have a rough learning curve because it can get hard at first and may seem intimidating becuase there is no Microsoft Dark Cloud Monopoly behind you...watching:x :r :D :r :x

You can always get xxxxx [edited for piracy promotion] for free from my momma!, you know. People love sharing that kind of stuff with other people. I don't think there should be any problem with that.

Hey all, I've used Windows since 3.11 and I've got to tell you, I fully agree with those who say WinXP is the best one yet. I use WinXP Pro and have very few problems with it, mainly just OLD games not wanting to run on it. No biggie there. Other then that, it's been the absolute most stable OS I've ever worked with. We use NT 4.0 at work and I've talked to our IT guys about changing over to XP. But, it's the military so they take their time on these things. WinME bites the big one. I took my laptop with me on deployment and it had ME on it. I forgot to take my recovery disc with me so I had to be extra careful with how I ran the computer 'cause I coulsn't do a re-install. It barely made it the 7 months we were gone. My brother is the one who got me to try XP and my only regret is not getting it sooner. I was running W2K Pro before and was satisfied with it. XP is faster on my machine the any previous version of Windows. Yeah it might take a few more resources, but, using the same hardware, my processing time on Seti@Home dropped from about 5 hours a WU to about 3 hours. Quite and improvement I think. If you're building the computer to resell, then I highly suggest WinXP, either Home or Pro. How ever buys it from you will be a lot more satisifed with the stablility of the system. If you're selling to someone that's good with computer's though, you might want to give Linux a run. Bundle both with the computer and then they can make the choice.

Isn't Win2k the business version of WinMe? It's not very gamer friendly is it?
I've just heard way too many bad things about WinMe!!
Win98se ran well for me. But if you're shelling out the kind of money we're talking about for a new OS, why would you want something that old? 5yrs and 3 versions ago.
Linux? Can you say, "Are you experienced?" :D
I just have one question about XP. Which version (home/pro) is more hardware upgrade friendly? You know does'n't freak out so bad when you want to pop in another video card or something? I'm asking this because I heard or read somewhere that the home version really goes into a tailspin for the least little thing, and the pro ver isn't as bad. That's why I bought the pro ver.:t

Win2k was out even before winme... And no Winme has nothing to do with 2k. 2k is based on the NT kernel, which XP pro is based one. The 9x kernel is 98se, ME, and XP home (not 100% sure of XP home though..)

BPB- What I mean is, not hardware compatibility issues or anything. But getting "permission" from ms, 'cause it thinks it's a new/different unit or something. I may not be explaining myself very well:(
I'm asking because I read about something like that in a magazine somewhere when XP first came out. So I'm wondering if that's still an issue?

All of those types of issues are common to both Pro and Home. I'm telling you that there's no significant PnP differences between them.

Great.
I bought pro because last I heard you could do more hardware upgrades than the home ver before the os raised a red flag and sent you to ms.
Thats real great, I like to fiddle. Don't ask why, its that whole cigar thing...

newcentury (if you're still monitoring),
I checked with about a dozen folks, I know are shopping, and asked what they would be looking for in an OS on a new computer.
A couple wanted Win98SE available.
One wanted ME.
Three wanted Win2k.
The rest wanted XP.
So about half wanted XP. Don't know how many new computers you're building nor the turn-around time you've planned from order to delivery. If you need to have a stock of operating systems, stock more XP than the others.
You could initially offer pro versions as an upgrade with a bit longer turn-a-round time. At least until you get a feel for the demand.
Now to everyone else,
Is Bill the only one with a sense of direction? This guy is building new computers to sell - he needs advice to provide a product to the general population. He may end up with someone who would prefer a computer without an OS and then the Ford vs Chevy issue can be argued. Selling is all about options though. I've used them all and have preferences - but preferences don't address newcentury's need. Additionally, people who pay someone to build a computer for them probably won't use Linux.
I understand, it's easy to get caught up in a preferences issue. And I don't mean to sound harsh. Just felt the need to return this thread back to the original request.
