My school has a wireless networking system. I use my laptop there for internet access and school work. It is the only network that it's ever been connected to. Apparently I got the opaserv worm from there (found the Tmp.ini file on my system). I have rid myself of the nasty worm and installed the patch that is supposed to keep me from getting it again.

I am going to be getting a new laptop this week and plan on installing sygate and Nortons before I ever take it to school. My question is this...

Will the sygate and Nortons keep my new laptop from getting infected by viruses lurking around on the network? If not, what other precautions should I take?

Wireless networks are great when unmolested but easy to corrupt.

Nothing is foolproof, but if properly updated they should help a lot.

genie62 As long as your Norton Antivirus and Sygate Firewall is up today and both Configured properly, then you should have nothing to worry about :t

Thanks for your advice!!

If there was a way that MS would let me upgrade my laptop with the XP-Pro (which I bought for my desktop), would that make a difference in security?

The Security is not in your XP home/Pro

the security is in your Firewall software and your Wireless Settings

thanks, I won't waste my money upgrading. I called MS regarding licensing prices to upgrade my L/T. It's absolutely crazy, why do they do it??? because they CAN!!! UGH!!!!!!

With my student discount, I paid $99 for xp-pro at the school bookstore. To upgrade my laptop from home version to pro, the licensing would cost $189!!!!!!! I was advised that if I want to upgrade the laptop, my best option would be to run back to the school bookstore and buy another XP CD-ROM for ANOTHER $100!!!! AGGHHHHH!!!!! No wonder so many people hate Mr. Gates and MS!!!!!!

It makes no freaking sense to me, but I guess it makes all the cents in the world to them!!!!

Thanks for your help, you guys are the bestest!!! ;)

xp pro retails for $299, so $189 isn't all that bad. They give good deals to schools and teachers. Go with the bookstore discount if you want pro.
