I've wanted to order one of these for the longest time. Are they worth the money? I'm a sucker for aesthetics and their custom tweaking features are intriguing. I'm not usually one for buying brand-name PCs, but ****, do they look cool.

What are your thoughts on this company?

Check google for reviews of some Alienware systems. When in doubt, always search until you find a well-written review. Alienware has a good rep as far as I've heard, but I wouldn't buy one myself without doing this checking either, preferably get ratings on the base system closest to whatever you want.

They do look cool. And the magazine articles I've read about them have rated them high. But (always a but) a quick search of Google (http://www.google.com/) brought a disturbing trend...many complains about very poor customer service/tech help. So you may want to head to Google and do your own search for Alienware.

This is one from Google newsgroups for Alienware (http://groups.google.com/groups?q=Alienware&hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&sa=G)

Epinions is good review site to research (http://www.epinions.com/cmhd-Desktops-All-Alienware)

You can also enter an address or web site into the BBB's online search right here (http://search.bbb.org/search.html)

FWIW: You might want to check out some gaming sites/mags, plus ask questions here. As far as looks I've seen some really hot ones while browsing computer cases and mods on the internet:

Beware of alienware if you want to tweak or overclock. Since they have such high volume they need to supply their systems with intel motherboards. This is to avoid... issues... that occur when people overclock their systems. Otherwise the components are kick ****, for a price. Go falcon Northwest, ABS or Voodoo PC if you want the ultimate in tweakability.

Beware--

tweaking... has many addicts.... :p :D

Alienware Computers is cool but they so expensive. But.. you got to realize how suck their sound/video card.. Also you can find some case which is better than Alienware Check here (http://www.ocsystem.com) :D

While Alienware is definitely better than hp or dell, they are extremely expensive for what you get.

Talk to people here and learn how to build your system and you'll save more than a few hundred dollars over the alienware system, AND you'll know how to fix it if it breaks. :)

... they are extremely expensive for what you get...

I couldn't agree more, they are unbelievably expensive for what you get. Builld your own for about $600 and with what you save go skiing for a week this winter.

(For what you are paying shouldn't they give you the Exigy sound card?)

No, the Extigy sucks for gaming. It's mainly for laptops and people too lazy to install a sound card. It takes 2x as much processing power as the Audigy to do fewer effects.

Although they should give you more than the SB Live i've seen in their systems. :p

Oops, you're right, the Audigy, not the Exigy...wouldn't the SBLive! be just fine though for your typical gaming box? It seems to me that the Audigy has features that would be rarely used.

...stilll for what Alienware is asking I'm surprised not to see the Audigy card.

Ive seen some of the sweetest prebuilt computers ever from alienware, but then i look down at the price......

The best idea would be to just build your own

Need help with that? PLENTY of people here willing to help.
