What do you guys think about HDD coolers? R they nessesary? I am trying to get rid of as much heat as possible here, but the cooler seems realy bulky, and looks like it would restrict air flow inside the case. My hdd gets preaty warm as it is a scsi 15000rpm cheetah.
Thanks for your help!
If you think your hard drive is running too hot, I'd get one. In fact, I've been meaning to get one for my Seagate Medalist which runs way too hot. Coolers usually either mount the drive in a 5 1/4" bay with fans in front of it (or sometimes around it), or as a unit that screws onto the underside of the drive and blows air over the hard drive's chipset. Personally I intend to go with the cooler that sits in the 5 1/4" bay since it looks like it would cool more of the drive.
If your HD gets hot - cool it http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
I have IBM DTLA 75GXP 45 GB 7200 RPM - and it needs cooling badly, right Socalgal ? http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
For better flow inside the case, if you have something beyond 4 5.25" bays, like 5 or 7, try mounting your HD in top of the case, and using exaust fan beyond the PSU (if you can).

I am currently using the vantec triple fan cooler for 5 1/4 bay.

I use a dual fan 5 1/4" bay cooler, it cools the drives and also helps draw some of the heat out of the case.

Thanks for your help.... so its more of a problem with heat damaging the chipset, or can problems with mechanical parts arise also? And what is "too hot" for a hard drive. How can you tell if you need cooling?
