How diffucult is it to setup an external modem?... I have thought for sometime I would like to see how it works, altho I like an internal dialup modem, and have a 56K USR hardware modem installed now, and get usually about 53 K connects...I would still like to check out an external..but could never qualify the expense on any I have seen advertised. How do you ship?...USPS probably?...

Yes i ship USPS insured. As for setting it up, i just plugged it in to a com port and windows xp took over from there.
There must be something about USR modems because its the only brand of modem i have ever used that would connect at 53 k.

Ok...I use Win98 yet...may add Win2K in a dual boot configuration later...I am saving the D: partition for that.

Its the software protocols USR and 3Com use. I donno about now (today, ect) but about 5 years ago, I went thru several modems with horrible connects, disconnects every few minutes ect ect. The help techs at the ISP I had at the time (MCI I think) were helpfull, but could not "cure" my problems. Finally, I got one tech on the phone that apparently knew a bit more about modems and their installation/drivers ect...and told me that if I would get a USR (ISA at the time) that the 'language' used in their protocols would match what most all ISPs were using...in other words, if the two modems couldn't talk to each other...they would not work, and I would be forever fighting a no win situation. I went out that day and bought a USR ISA hardware modem at Sams, and have had no problems sence (that was here at my machine...ISP yeah...)

I'll take your USR external to play with, learn from..and keep on the shelf for a backup...just in case lightning gets me again!!

How much to South Carolina?

You can post the info here or PM me the necessary...whatever

PS, I forgot to ask...is it complete with serial cable and power supply? Is this the black colored one or the white?..(not that that makes any difference)

Received Modem, Thank you very much! It's exactly like the one I have. Makes for a great back up! That's unless my brother talks me into selling it to him. Again Thanks!:t
