Dunno if this is what you want but ...
I had a network installed in my previous home and had an electrician do it for me cuz they know all about fishing cable through walls 'n stuff that I didn't want to bother with. Back then it was a freebie cuz the guy was dating my daughter. I got an estimmate for my current house of $550 for, I think, five outlets. My estimate might be high because part of the cabling must go outdoors to an attached bedroom, requiring running conduit outside.
Lots of local contractors do it these days and, of course, Ma Bell will be only to happy to free you from some of your hard-earned cash. (Actually, Ma Bell might be cheaper; I never really asked.)
If it's at all complex, I would suggest having a professional do it. Regardless, you want the work to LOOK professional cuz you may someday want to sell the house and you don't want an unsightly network to detract from the value of what is probably your single greatest investment.
Technically, it's as simple as dirt. You need a hub of some sort (cost maybe $100), a NIC in each machine and some CAT-5 cable. Plug each machine into the hub, set up the software and go. I set up my first network just using Windows on-line help; it's that easy.

Sorry guys, I should have pointed out that I'm looking for resources that will help me build a network in an office!
Basically I'm starting my own web design company and we've got this old pub that we are converting into offices and to save on money I was hoping we could build the network ourselves...I've built simple networks before...just draping std. length patch cables between machines and a hub, but now I need to know about making cables of varying lengths and how is best to lay them, etc.

Try: http://www.cisco.com/pcgi-bin/ibld/all.pl?i=support&c=2&m=GUEST
Scroll down to "Internetworking design guide"
There's also lots of other doc's on networking, as you will discover.
For cabling try: http://www.datacottage.com/
Just off the top of my head I think the new ethernet cable standard is CAT5 D or U or something like that - basically its a CAT 5 cable that can handle Giga bit/s transfer (in theory).

but the twisted pairs in cat 5 cable aren't supposed to be untwisted at either end where the plug or connector or whatever more than a half inch. you will also need a 8 conductor crimp tool with the plugs. and don't run it parallel to any ac power cords...
