I'm building a computer for my dad. It's gonna have:

athlon xp1600
256mb ddr2100
-(1) cd-rom drive
-(1) floppy drive
-(1) 20gb hd
-Integrated video, sound, and lan
-dial-up modem

Will a 250 watt power supply be enough? He wont be adding any peripherals either. He's an internet & office programs user, but he kinda likes grand theft auto 3, so i may give him my old voodoo4500 32mb video card. he's 43 and likes gta3. i find that funny.

thanks guys

Whats so funny about that I'm 53 playing nhl 98 on a network at a shop, medal of honor and wolfenstein for personal use.

Sorry but I'm taking offense at that, **** whippersnapper. :D And while I'm at it why not give him at least a gf3, pop deserves a little better.

I got a black truck too, 85' full size blazer with a manual stick.

yea a 300-350 would benice, especially because you don't know what else you might want to put in next.

At least 300 watts, and pop in a gf3 as rangeral recommended. He'll thank you for it. Don't go cheap on your old man.

Nobody ever plans to upgrade ...until the newest bestest games are released and the newest bestest Video cards are needed to run them.

300-350!

Hate to say this, but that 250 watt might work with that setup. Probably not if you use the GF3, though.

I built this setup:

xp1800
Asus nforce motherboard
256 mb ddr2100
40 GB IBM 7200 rpm HD
32x burner
floppy
modem

for a friend at church to use for internet/typing

on a 180 watt psu included with an extremely small micro atx case, and she hasn't had any problems yet.

Although my system:

xp2000, gf ti4200, kt333, 256mb ddr2700, 16x dvd and 20x burner

didn't work properly on a cheap 300 watt psu, but works fine on a good 420. :)

BUT - Only try the 250 if you already have it. Otherwise, get at least a 350 from Antec, Vantec, Enermax, Sparkle or some other good company.
