I went with my mother to buy her a new computer about a year ago. All this time I thought she had an AMD/Athlon 700mghz. When I got into system properties, it tells me I have a PII-MMX! WTF?? Did we get the shaft?

How about removing a couple screws on the case and just looking?

Someone else can probably confirm this, but if you have a version of windows that hasn't been updated in a while, it might not be reporting the CPU properly (you have an Athlon, but windows just isn't describing it as one). This makes no difference, it won't make your computer slower, or cause any problems.

download the above file and see what it says before you get too worried.

If it says you have a P2...well, I don't think it will so cross that bridge when you get to it.

What is the processor detected as when you first boot the system? You should see "AMD" mentioned in a couple of places.

EXACTLY what does it say? I'm running the original Winders/98 (no upgrades, not S.E.) and under "Computer:" there are four lines. Lines two and three read:

"AMD-K6 (tm) 3D+ Processor" (which is correct) and

"Intel MMX(TM) Technology", which is also correct.

My mobo is a Tyan Trinity 400 Socket 7.
