I do charity work. I get parts and turn them into working computers for needy school kids in my area.

I got this Asus board, the Asus P28-VE pretty bare. No prob, I'll go to the Asus site. Great mobo mfgr with a great site. Wrong, not a mention of that board at all!!! There is a P2B-VM but the board is different so I wouldnt trust the bios update.

Actually I believe that Gateway and HP both used this 440bx board in their units in the P2 days. This unit still boots with the HP logo, I havent got rid of it yet.

Anyway, this mobo needs a bios update so I can put in a decent hard drive. Can anyone help me with this? The present bios is Phoenix v1.01 from 12/3/98. I havent tried a 10 gig hard drive but I bet it wont go, short of putting in a promise or ultra pci card.
Course if I could get into the hp or gateway site as a customer, then I could download newer bios!!
I would like to get a bios update but I also like to have as much stuff as I can get so if anyone can help me with a cd of drivers that would be great too.
These kids need room for the mp3's they download, dont ya know! Appreciate if someone could help me out.

Thanks

Update:

I have been to the HP w\site and found some documentation but still cannot find the bios update I need.

Might as well jump to this thread now.

I guess I was right about it being OEM.

What model of HP did this board come out of?

That board should take up to at least a 32GB. 440BX should be fine. Even 430TX boards can take up to 32GB.

As for drivers, you'll have to look it up by model number of the computer. If you had a recovery disc, then it would install the OS and drivers for you.

To Midnyte:

I wish I knew what model HP the mobo came from but I don't!!
AS for the bios, when it boots up it says:

Phoenix Bios 4.0
release 6.0.8
HP rev 1.0

In the bios setup it says:
phoenix bios 1.01 12/3/98

So that tells us it is a Phoenix bios that HP has messed with and added their logo to!!

I dont have the recovery cd, just the bare board. I do have the mobo up and running, I was just hoping someone would recognize all this and perhaps give me a copy of a newer bios and other info as needed. I did get a lot of info from HP as far as jumper settings and a pic of the mobo and all, but I cant get a newer bios or anything else cuz I dont know which model this is.

Hope someone here can help me.

I found out that the mobo was in a HP Pavilion in the model range from 6400 to 8500, somewhere in there. P2 400 was originally installed in this mobo.

You're kinda stuck. without knowing the exact model, it's very difficult to find out anything. you would have to get the bios from HP.

You might need to find the HP tattoo utility and read the model and serial number off the bios. the problem is, you have to know which version of the tattoo to use and there are 4 releases every year; spring, summer, fall and winter.

anyways, that hard drive should work, so just try it.

I have it operating, win98SE on a 3.2 gig drive. I just installed a 4.2 gig slave and bios sees that.
I tried a western digital 17 gig slaved but it couldnt see the drive so it is prolly at that 8.4 threshold.

Would like to get newer bios to install a bigger drive in.
Maybe someone will oblige.

thanks
