I have a little girl who is destroying her disney movies. (I guess i should not have gotten her dvd's) Has anyone out there tried to burn dvds to cd. I have read a little about the process and it seems easy enough. I just wanted to know if anyone here had actually done it and what their thoughts were.

You can rip the DVD into MPEG2 and make an SVCD out of it. It will be better than VHS but not as good as DVD. It takes a little reading ( http://www.vcdhelp.com/mpeg2to.htm ) . You can also get a DVD-R drive that is now available int he top of the line Macs. I am sure it will work on a PC too, but the $$$ is going to be high.

I have been backing up my DVDs ever since I found out how here:
http://www.tomshardware.com/video/00q3/000913/index.html

I basically got really pi$d off one day when all my movies were out of place: in the wrong sleeve, on the floor, collecting dust, etc. (roommates). So I compressed them, and I keep the originals away from them.

DivX provides good compression, but RobRich was pushing Direct Media 8, and it sounds pretty good. I downloaded the files off Microsoft's site, but I can't figure it out.

BTW, both of these formats are only playable on a computer.
