I'm having this problem on 2 brand new mobos. They are shuttle MV42N. When I turn off the power while windows is running (not shutting down properly, but just turn it off) the bios loses all of it's settings. It acts as if there is no battery there. This is the only time this happens, is when I just kill the power while windows is already up, it does not happen it i kill the power during post. I have never seen this problem before and this is the only issue with these 2 brand new boards. I assumed it was some sorta bios glitch but shuttle has no info posted about it on their site, and they have no update available:x

Never heard of that before but a couple of pointers to start with...
are the front panel switches wired correctly?
is the board shorting out somewhere?
Is the PSU up to the Job?

1) well the panel switches are not a factor because they were not even hooked up.
2) I don't know about the board shorting out. If it was I would not be able to boot and use the computer...correct?
3) PS is ok, I'm using a 350W to run celeron 1GHZ with 1 CD-ROM and 256 memory...thats about it:t

try it with the switch wired up, it may be that the switch triggers the battery to kick in under those "emergency shutdown" conditions.

wierd - only time I ever had my CMOS reset or lose it's settings with a new system on its own was when building a system or two and I was trying combinations of ram and cpu, messing around with o'clocking options - sometimes the board would simply not post again until I reset CMOS with the onboard jumper

I also had it happen using mix and match sticks of RAM, or where my bios settings for the RAM weren't right

that's about all I have - good luck -someone else may be able to help :t

thx for the posts so far but no luck yet. I'm not OCing and the RAM is a single stick so no mismatching going on. Also another thing i have not mentioned is that after it looses the settings it will not hold the settings again until after i reset with CMOS jumper. I'm starting to think its a the stinking board, but i have 2 with this same problem:( . It would be cool if someone else has this board and gets the same problem, at least i would know:t

Thx for the help guys

I just had a similar experience happen to me. I put computers together out of donated parts and they go to needy school kids.

So I am working on this mobo (Asus by chance) P2B-VE. I install a cpu and the fan wont work. So I put a new fan on and all is well. and the system is up and running. So now I have the old fan and I wanna see if I should junk it or not. So I plug it into an empty fan slot on the mobo and turn it on. Nothing!!! No post!

So I take the fan off, still nothing. I had to reset the CMOS and now it boots to win but my settings in bios were all messed up and some windows settings as well, all over this fan.

But the system is keeping the settings now so I somehow caused a temporary short or overload. The end is different from your prob cuz my settings stay where they were.

I would suspect what fellow above said, that you want to make sure you have all the case wiring hooked up to the mobo and see if that solves the prob, in that maybe a lack would cause bios to not save settings. Possible!

Course you checked the battery and it is up to snuff.
