I have a movie in avi and I don't like all those pixels. Will converting it to mpeg restore the original no pixel look? Can someone point me to a avi to mpeg converter?

I read the post below about coping DVDs into MPEG4 files. Do those still play on a DVD player? And what can copy DVDs into regular MPEG2 files. I don't care if the movie takes 2 or 3 CDs as long as it looks good.

vcdhelp is a great place to learn. Go with SVCD format if your standalone DVD player supports it. This is the best "near-DVD" quality you will get. A long movie will fit on 3 CDs. It is very tricky to copy DVDs because of all the protections, but VCDhelp is a good place to start. I backup a lot of my DVDs and the programs i use to do it are:

Smartripper-- (to rip the DVD to hard drive)

DVD2AVI w/VFP plugin-- (to set the movie up and let it be fed into a Mpeg encoding program, and also to rip the audio tracks to WAV files)

TmpegEnc w/ VFP plugin-- To convert the DVD2AVI file into an Mpeg2 SVCD format file.

It will take some time for the whole process but its well worth it. From start to finish i can convert a 2 hour movie in about 13 hours on my Cel566@850/128MB/2X DVD/30GB Maxtor 5400RPM hard drive.

cool, thanks alot, I'm way more educated now. Once I use TmpegEnc do I burn the file as SVDC or VDC?

I can't just take an AVI file and make it SVDC to improve the quality(get rid of pixels), can I? I tried with one and it came out to be even worse.

Another question. What program can modify, i.e. cut end or beginning of an mpeg movie and divide movies into smaller files so I can burn them onto seperate CDs?
