Orion_Ta_Vega 08-02-1999, 09:35 PM I just put a 13 gig in mine. In the setup program it said that the partition was 13 gig, but win95 says it only has 12.1 gig. I dont know, maybe that is just the highest it can read. My friend has win98 with a 6.4 gig HD and his comp says it only has a 2.1 gig, but thats just the max it can post too, also, my mom has a comp in her room (she is a teacher) that has like a 8 gig HD with win95 and it says it only has 2.1 gig, but i know it doesnt because I put about 4 gig worth of games on it. I hope that helped... Jeff Stan 08-03-1999, 05:41 AM Hi Yes Fdisk will recognise the 13Gb. The reason why Win95 does not recognize more that 2Gb is because of the file sytem it is using: FAT16. Win98 uses FAT32 break this "2Gb border". Hey, theguy: I would create a 1Gb partition for Win98 install and then the rest of the disk as one big partition. It is always recommended to install the OS on a separate partition. One last thing: the reaon why your 13Gb Hd shows only 12.1 Gb is the following: 1Gb in dec = 10^6 = 1000000 bytes (the disk manufacturer point of vue) 1Gb in bin = 2^20 = 1048576 bytes (the OS point of vue) That makes a big difference ! Stan 800XL 08-03-1999, 10:15 AM Fdisk from dos 6.22 will not see the entire 10 gig drive as a single partition. Only a Win98 or Win95 OSR2 fdisk will see larger than 2 gigs as a single primary partition. Stan's idea to partition only part of the drive is sound, but you might want to convert it to FAT32 once you have 98 installed. Create one partition to hold 98, install 98, then convert the partition to FAT32, run fdisk and create an extended partition and logical drive(s) to take up the rest of the drive. Other options include getting your hands on a 98 or 95R2 bootdisk and running fdisk from there or something like partition magic if you only want one partition on the drive. Stan 08-03-1999, 10:25 AM Yep, 800XL is right about Fdisk. After re-reading my post, I realised that the Fdisk version I am using comes from the Win98 startup disk. If you install Win98 and then convert to FAT32, it is recommended to re-install Win98, according to Microsoft. But I don't know why... Like 800XL said, try to use a Win98 startup disk and use Fdisk to create your partitions. To create/format the partitons using FAT32 (instead of FAT16), you need to enable large disk support. Fdisk asks you that question when you run it. Stan SysOpt.com
