Hi,
I've got a problem with an Athlon XP 1800+ processor. The system is only reporting it as 1.15Ghz when it should be 1.8Ghz.
My specs are:
AMD Athlon XP 1800+ processor
Gigabyte 7VTXH Motherboard
512Mb DDR RAM
GeForce 2/MX 64Mb graphics
--
Multiplier is 11.5x (auto set by the motherboard).
FSB Speed is 200 Mhz (2x100Mhz)
Should the FSB Speed be 266Mhz (2x133Mhz)? If so, What setting needs to be changed in the BIOS?
I would have tried already but the processor is already running fairly hot, will changing it push the CPU temp up much more?

You'll achieve XP1800+ speed only at 133mHz fsb. Look in your mobo manual regarding how to set fsb speed (most mobos allow you to do so either through hardware jumper settings, through BIOS "softmenu" style settings, or offer both options).
At 100mHz fsb, you see 1150mHz (11.5 multiplier)... at 133mHz, you will see 1534mHz (XP1800+).
Regarding temps... what temps are you at (both at idle, and under 100% cpu load)? Are you using the retail HS/fan that comes with the retail package cpu? Did you use any thermal tape or thermal paste on the surface between the HS base and the cpu core? Are you certain that the HS is seated flat against the cpu core and not hung up on that raised ledge of the cpu socket?

Idle it is 47.0C
At 100% CPU load... 51.0C
Mobo temp is about 34.0C
I'm using the "AMD approved" H/S and fan that came with the processor. I'm using thermal tape oon the surface between the H/S base and CPU core and I did check it was seated properly when I installed it.
Although it took a lot of pressure to clip that heatsink on, I don't know how I'm gonna get it off again easily if I ever need to.

Multiplier is fixed, bus frequency is set on mainboard (by jumper or BIOS setting). If too hot, check your CPU cooling. Also, keep an eye on power supply unit adequacy.

Your temps are ok

Well I increased the FSB on the board (The BIOS wouldn't seem to accept the new setting if I tried to change it in the BIOS) and temps only went up about 2 degrees C so fingers crossed.
Thanks

Thanks At 53°C (100% cpu output) you should be fine... you can always do a couple °C better by replacing the thermal tape with thermal compound (Arctic Silver II or III), and you will see a significant temp drop by going to a better HS/fan (I won't even mention brands/models since there sre too many threads on this subject at sysopt.com already... just do a search ;) )

PS: hint, HINT... ThermalRight AX7/Sunon or YSTech 80mm fan at 40-50cfm... relatively quiet, great cooling :p

just be be absolutely clear on what jmichna said
these amd + are confusing - amd rates yoursequal to an pentium 1800 at their 1534 mhz speed
(11.5 multiplier)... at 133mHz, you will see 1534mHz (XP1800+).
CPU temp has nothing to do with the clock speed problem that jonat8 is experiencing. Simply go into the BIOS and into Voltage Settings for the CPU. Change the FSB from 100 to 133 and that should set the CPU speed at 1.8 Ghz.

Just to put this is plain English the XP 1800 runs at 133 MHz so if you need to change this in the BIOS do it! Once this is set than you will see the MHz on the system be 1529.5 MHz OR 133 x 11.5= 1529.5
MY XP 2000 shows up at 1662.5 MHz cause it is 12.5 x 133 = 1662.5 MHz
The logic behind calling the XP 1800 is because it is faster than the Pentium 1.8 GHz. The XP 2000 is faster than the P4 2.0 and so on!
The Temps are a separate issue and there are tons of posts about the Temp and XP's.
Do you have any software cooler installed- if not than I would find one! The Cooler XP software that came with my MSI board drops the temps down 10-18 degrees most of the time! :t
